I took my 3 yr old here and we had such a great time. We just walked around a peninsula and he got to throw all the rocks and shells into the water he wanted! As you walk on the beach, the crackling of the many shells scattered in the sand is amazing! We will be going back!
We camped here in the smaller, new loop (site 114) over Thanksgiving weekend. The larger loop was closed for repairs and winter, I guess. It appeared they are redoing electric and water on the large loop. The bathhouses over there looked like old typical state park bathrooms although they were locked so we couldn't check the inside out. The bathhouse in this loop (small loop) is very nice (compared to older state park bath houses). It even was heated! The campground host provided hand soap which was wonderful! I meant to tip them, but forgot. Our site, 114 was level and out on the point of the peninsula. It would not be a good site for a boat that stayed in the water due to rip rap and the steepness down to lake. The lake might be a little low due to winter? Anyway, i liked our site. All the sites were really close to the bathroom, which is nice. We had family and friends on sites 112 and 113. I would say 113 was the best and furthest on the point. Still pretty steep to get into the lake if swimming in the summer. We enjoyed riding bikes around. It seems like a pretty out of the way place to escape. There is a store if you turn right out of the park about a mile down where you can get ice, etc. I didn't go in the park museum but friends did and loved it. This park is close/kind of to 96. Not real close to Greenwood. We enjoyed it and hope to go back with the boat in the summer to enjoy the lake. There is a boat ramp in the campground.
we took a drive through the park and it was very clean and the views were wonderful. we plan on going back and staying there in our camper. very nice place
As we have found with most all SC State Parks, Lake Greenwood is clean, well run, and is good value for the fees they charge. Most of the sites are right on the lake and provide easy access for power boats or pontoon boats to dock right at your campsite. There is quite a bit of boat traffic in the main channel, but we were located in a cove so saw/heard little of that. We took our kayak and found small, quiet coves with lots of wildlife. The water was clear and very warm (Sep). The sites and roads are all paved and in good shape. Most sites have a slight grade and are fairly close to each other. There were extra vehicles in many of the sites since some people towed their camper and another vehicle towed a boat. There was a constant ranger presence, but they never seemed to hear the incessantly barking dogs. The bathrooms and showers appeared to be freshly painted and were very clean. Reception on Verizon data was 2-3 bars and OTA TV was 10 channels. There are short hiking trails throughout the park and limited areas to ride bikes except on the park roads. On exit, there are 2 dump sites about 500 yards apart. Not far from the park is the Ninety Six Historic Site. We will be back for a return visit.
2 dollars to get in per person and worth every penny,Simply beautiful and very clean and well kept. You can stroll along the lake and look out across in all directions.Take a picnic and make a day of it,Beautiful place.
I have never stayed at the state park because we have our own place not far from there, but we have visited many friends staying at the state park. Overall it seems to be very safe, clean, and great views.
LIKES: Beautiful clean lake and campgrounds. Clean bath houses. The museum is a must see if you stay here. Very informative about the CCC. DISLIKES: Extremely close camp spots, you're practically on top of one another, but people didn't seem to care, the place was packed full. They also we very slanted, not level. Only 1 hiking trail that was very short, .9 of a mile. You better bring everything that you need, I didn't see a store to get last minute supplies.I would go back here, even though there are some negative things about it.
Nice place to hang out with family. Place was clean and many areas for people to hang out with not being surrounded by others. Playgrounds were nice for the kids but wish they had swings for toddlers. Check it out
Campsites are small but spacious, there are lots shadey area. There are nice area to raise your tent in the woods. There are boot ramps and fishing on the lake. Nice area to relay, away from the crowd for a little get away time. The lake is beautiful at night.
I only live a short distance from the area and never visited until last summer. There are some wonderful covered shelters that are great for a big get-together or to have a picnic in the rain (which we did...it wasn't intended, it just happened to rain and it turned out to be a wonderful day). We plan on taking the grandkids camping here soon.
We came to this park to scope it out in advance of camping, and I'm glad we did. We have no desire to camp here now. It's not a terrible place but there are far better options even closer to our home. I personally did not find the camping sites to be spacious or nice. As will happen when you're on water property many seemed washed out and not repaired. One looked so steep/scary there's no way I'd back a vehicle in and sleep on it. The sites had no privacy from each other or the campground road and were small in my opinion. Although most, if not all, were lakefront so you would have nice views. In comparison, to say Lake Hartwell, this lake is much less crowded. If you had a boat and want a little peace and quiet this might be more for you. Let's not kid ourselves, all bodies of water are "dirty" to some degree and so you take your own risks and make your own judgments about swimming. I would certainly prefer swimming here to Hartwell which is nothing but gross. I didn't notice any kid's playground equipment if they had it, most of our state parks do. We didn't use the bathroom facilities on our short visit. And it must be noted this park is not in Greenwood, not really even close to it. I believe the actual address was Ninety Six, SC.
Great vacation spot!! Campsites are on two small peninsulas right on the water's edge. Spacious, shady spots, most quite level for your RV, nice tent spots in the woods. Boat ramps in the camping area. A fisherman's paradise! Not far from Ninety Six national historic Revolutionary War site with interesting history and good hiking trails.
Relay nice place .. Not much crowd. Cool place to do fishing and enjoy the time infront of a beautiful lake. Entry fee is 2$/ person. If you have boats , you can enjoy more. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Camped there for 4 weeks last summer and loved it. Already have reservations for 2 weeks this July. My daughter keeps asking how much longer, we are so ready to go.
Small public lake access where it's crowded with young punks and white trash (rednecks) and yes I'm white myself but I can spot people with no class white or black . People trashing the place beer cans thrown directly by trash can and not in it. Not to mention water is nasty and I stepped on a beer bottle my first and only visit. Will never go here again.
