One of my favorite things about the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village is the group of folks who play old time string music during the Farmer's Market held Saturdays during warm weather months. You'll hear two or three fiddles (no violins), a guitar or two, a banjo, an occasional mandolin and a washtub bass. And they're really good! I sat in with them on guitar on Saturday last fall and had a great time. Anyone's welcome (but don't bring anything that requires electricity or try to play anything by anyone who's alive - wouldn't be cool at all ;-)). Wonderful place to visit and lots to see besides the music.
Mint Hill’s Historic Villiage is the original small town of Mint Hilll way back when. Hands on exhibits, and local made food and good old pick’en of the fiddle, mandolin, banjo and more. After that you can check out the local artists at Pottery 51, SpotLight Accademy for the Arts, Mint Hill Art Gallery and eat at Hawthornes for great food and hospitality. Mint Hill is 20 minutes of of Charlotte on the South East side of town..Mint Hill can be reached off of 485, Ablemaire Road and why 74
Nice mock tow that shows how residents lived in Mint Hill generations ago. Well built by volunteers and local residents.
Right next to the Mint Hill Farmer's Market is the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village, made up of several historic buildings, including the doctor's museum, schoolhouse (you can sit in the corner), assayer's office (you can pan for gold) and blacksmith's shop (not always open). On most days when the market is open, there is something happening. Typically they have a demonstration of some skill, such as knife sharpening, panning for gold or a somewhat impromptu gathering of homemade instruments playing bluegrass music that is well worth a stop. Sometimes it is more current, with ham radio or something requiring electricity. Regardless, definitely worth a stroll back in time.
Very nicely curated Historic Village. My young son and I visit my retired parents in Mint Hill each summer and this village is right next to the local farmer's market (also great). It's like stepping back into another era. Especially for a citified northerner like me. I especially love going through the doctor's office and my son loves the general store. If you're lucky, you may even stumble upon a group of local musician strumming their fiddles and banjos - WONDERFUL!
There is an old room school house, old doctors office, old store, blacksmith shope, carriage barn, an original assay office where miners formerly brough their gold to be valued and purchased and much more. You can even pan for gold.
Waiting for our kids (Who live in Mint Hill) to get ready last week we decided to drive the 500yds to visit 'The County Doctors Museum' on Matthews Mint Hill Road. Having past it for over two years and never noticed it, I dropped on this gem surfing the net in a quiet moment. The Museum is run by Mint Hill Historical Society and funded by the $5 tour coast and donations. The museum consists of a number of buildings, Doctors Surgery, Assay Office, School House, Local Store and Mining buildings. (A number of other buildings that have been donated are planned for 2013, funds permitting)The tours run at 11am daily Tues - Sat, we turned up at 11.30am and we were offered a private tour, our guide was so full of local and general 1800 - 1900 facts it made the tour an excellent view into Mint Hills past in addition to me finding out all sorts of Historical American info. The buildings are packed to the rafters with items from past era's and it all works amazingly well together considering some of the articles span 100 years between them. The Doctors surgery is amazing and worth the visit alone.I would strongly recommend that all visitors to Charlotte and natives of Mint HIll visit this attraction and support this small yet perfect piece of American History.
