garwood orchards

This is a beautiful orchard with great people!! They had a band tons of good apples to pick. Reasonably priced food and drink. Horse drawn wagons and tractors to take you out picking with informative helpful people driving them. Such a nice family outing!

We visited several orchards in NW Indiana this weekend. Garwood Orchards was our favorite. The prices are very reasonable, they have tractor-pulled and horse-pulled rides to and from the picking area, there are reasonable portable bathrooms in the orchard, and there are many other things to pick -- raspberries, eggplants, pumpkins, various peppers, and more. There was also a lady giving pony rides.They fall into the "commercially savvy but not blatant tourist trap" orchard category. Highly recommended.

Had wanted to visit this location for some time. We just happened to pick the weekend when they hold their annual apple fest so it was very crowded. I am looking forward to returning when there are not such large crowds. Still, managed to get some great raspberries, green beans, apples and a delicious peach pie. Also, I will try the U pick when it is not so crowded. I read reviews that were disappointed because of the crowds and I understand their pain but I will definitely return. Also want to try the gelato.

We went on Sep 14, hSunday. We drove 70 miles to get here. It was a mistake ! We have never been to this orchard, and from the reviews that we read, it was excellent. We found out it was not so. It was so crowded, we had to walk a long way from the parking which was hard to find. There was a huge crowd. I called the week before to ask about honey crisp apples. I was told they will be ready for " u pick ". sept 13.When we got to the place where we had to buy the bags to put our apples, we had to wait in line about 10 minutes to get to it. After that we had to wait maybe another 15-20 minutes to take the wagon to jbe transported to the place where they had the honey crisp apple trees. When we got there, all the apples were gone. And this was around 11 am only. There were only limited number of trees , and after all that long wait, long drive and long lines, it was very disappointing. The few apples that were still on the tree had insect bites and were badly blemished. If they did not have anymore honey crisp apples available they should have informed us at the entrance, at least so we could have gone to another variety or else leave before wasting our time and effort. Everywhere you go, the line is at least 20 deep. We bought 3 empty bags hoping we could use it but we came back empty- handed. We tried to return the bags but we were told they can not take them back " for health reasons " ????We are not coming back, period !

Until our last visit, we had always been satisfied with Garwood Market. We made a special trip to Garwood on 6/29/14 to buy some sweet corn & local strawberries. My husband had collected the free corn cards for years. At this visit he presented the 6 free ears of corn card after 10 dozen had been purchased. The girl at the register informed my husband that they no longer accepted the free corn card. This is ridiculous,after he kept these cards for years & this cashier should have just accepted it & said nothing. Plus, the corn that we picked up that day was not sweet corn & it was not good. I wanted to buy some cherries and there was no weight scales anywhere to weigh the produce. I had to ask a guy to weigh them for me. Plus, the cherries that I bought were not sweet & not very good. Most of the cherries looked bruised.While at Garwood we questioned where the strawberries were & we were told that they did not sell strawberries in the Market. We were told that we would have to go to the self pick shack down the road. We arrived down the road & there were 3 teenagers just standing around. I asked if they had any strawberries in containers already picked for sale. They had no already picked berries, so I went ahead into the patch to pick & there were only a few berries hit or miss about the size of a grape. I returned to the shack with an empty container. At this point I could not figure out why these 3 teenagers were being paid to just stand around when they could have been picking the berries to sell in a container?This visit to Garwood Market was disappointing. It looked as though the market was run by kids, who care the least. Also, if they want to sell produce by the weight, they need to have scales available to self weigh. If they don't have anything good to sell, they should wait until later in the season to open & it would have been nice to see a responsible adult running the place.

Our family of 6 with varying ages enjoys the Garwood experience year after year. We appreciate the friendliness of the staff and the abundance of produce. This farm's simplicity is part of it's appeal, but that does not mean it lacks in any way. Bathrooms, service, orchards & fields are presented well, and the take home fruits and vegetables are excellent.

It was a great day picking apples ,large variety of apples and other veggies within an hour from Chicago in nw Indiana

I take my family here at least twice a year. They have a huge orchard, but also have many, many seasonal fruits and veggies. They will take you around on a tractor to the location you need ( raspberries, cherries, strawberries, etc). There is no admission charge. You can buy containers or bags for your collecting for a reasonable price. Check out their website for what is available that day. Also, stop at the store for delicious jams, donuts and pies!
