Decided to visit after reading about their Guest Engineer Program in the Chicago Tribune. If you have ever wanted to be a train engineer, this is your chance. They have had a huge interest in this program since the Tribune article so that you must waitlist if you want to participate and the fee has gone up from the original $70. The volunteers here are super nice and friendly and clearly love what they are doing. We took the English Lake train trip on the Saturday afternoon of Labor Day weekend, expecting a crowd but were pleasantly surprised at being in a small group of only about 10 people. We rode in the open air car which we enjoyed but you can choose to ride in an enclosed railcar as well. The museum is small, but interesting. My only complaint is that they had a continuous tape of "railroad music" going that was too loud and made it hard to read the museum exhibits, heck it made it hard to think period..Even so, I give it a big thumbs up, a fun excursion.
This Museum is a work in progress. They have several walk through exhibits. You can walk through the museum plus some of the old restored railroad cars. They have a restored troop carrying car and a double decker passenger car. With lots of pictures and articles. They have a restored switch house and a old steam engine. They have a couple of different train ride you can take, Be sure to check the web site for times and days. The local scouts have helped in restoring some of the cars. Although small, If you enjoy the old railroad, there's plenty of history here. There's a fee for the train ride, but most other exhibits are no charge. This is a on hands museum. Feel free to get up close and get your hands on.
