One of my favorite monuments in Washington DC is the Jefferson Monument. The building is a real tribute to one of the most important founding fathers of our country. It's a beautiful, marble building located next to a tidal basin so it has a dramatic sweep to it off the water and is awesome when viewed up close. The museum shop and historical displays and descriptions are wonderfully done. Not to be missed when visiting Washington DC.
Another place that simply makes you proud to be American. Take your kids, it will make their lives better
It's only about a twenty minute walk, maybe even fifteen with a brisk pace, to walk from the National Mall near the Washington Monument to get to Jefferson Memorial. After visiting the Lincoln Memorial we figured this would be anti-climatic and yet the Jefferson Memorial has an exceptional grandeur all of its own, and here again, as with the Lincoln Memorial, it is worth visiting after sunset. Also make sure to visit the exhibit under the monument and watch the short video on Jefferson. The crowds here are far smaller than at the Lincoln Memorial and you may be able to enjoy the entire monument for a few minutes by yourself. We had that opportunity and those few minutes were truly remarkable.
Located on the southeast shore of the Tidal Basin, directly opposite the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial is a bit out of the way, but well worth the walk to visit. The nearest Metro station is that at the Smithsonian, about one mile away, so it’s a 20-minute walk. The building’s neoclassical design, the work of John Russell Pope, was influenced not only by the Roman Pantheon but by the rotunda of the University of Virginia, which Jefferson himself designed. There are 26 columns in the building, which represent the number of states in the Union at the time of Jefferson’s death. As at the Lincoln Memorial, the marble steps leading inside are slippery when wet, so be careful! Once at the top, you’ll get a nice view of the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument almost due north. The memorial’s focal point is a 19-foot bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson standing under a coffered ceiling modeled after that of the Pantheon. The statue was originally cast in plaster, but was replaced by one in bronze after World War II metal rationing ended. Inscriptions that quote Jefferson’s writings adorn the surrounding walls, the most famous of which is from the Declaration of Independence.Overall, the Jefferson Memorial is a beautiful and fitting tribute to one of America’s most important Founding Fathers.
Massive monument. I was so excited to finally get to view this Washinton Momunent. Walked thru ice and rain to see this one. Don't miss it.
great views form the top of the steps. well designed. There is a lift but it wasn't working the day we went
The Jefferson Memorial is one of the older monuments and it is beautiful in its location and design. However it has been years since I actually visited on foot as it is so isolated from most of the other monuments and DC attractions. The tidal basin is wonderful and I am glad to see other monuments are now on it. However the last view times I have been to DC all I have are pictures from a distance.
If you see nothing else in Washington DC it should be this. It is a stunning monument -- elegant and graceful and situated beautifully along the reflective waters of the Potomac. It is breathtaking all year long, but moreso when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, for then they frame the monument with their pink and white blossoms.
