This was really neat. The artifacts they kept of the tornado damage was a real piece of history. And the story's of the survivors really told the story of the power of the storm. The people that still live there are some of the nicest people I've ever met. This town is a testament to the power of people when they work together. I wish more people would do the same.
This is a great attraction! Kids especially love the stairs and the hands-on museum experiences. NIce gift shop. There's a park with excellent climbing apparatus for kids right there.
I have been here several times both before and after the tornado. It has an interesting history to learn. The gift shop has been vastly improved. I visit here every time I am in the area (which is usually once a year).
after the tornado and the green channel tv show. I really wanted to make a stop in this little town. we did the big well and it was interesting enough to support its low entrance price. after that we drove the whole town (which took about 5 minutes) there is still basically nothing here. :( we struggled to fine a place to eat/contribute to the local economy. ended up eating a sandwich at the only? place it town. I had big hopes for this small town. but 7 years after the tornado. im not sure it will ever really recover again.
We were a little disappointed with this. They changed the stairway down after the tornado to a spiral one that hugs the walls. That makes it not very good to photograph anymore since the stairs are in the way, also it works against your view of it too. After all a well is all about the walls, right? But the new museum is very good and the gift store was nice. Worths topping and not expensive to get in. Open til 6 too.
Really enjoyed the Big Well & was fascinated by all the information about it. they have included many pictures & stories about the tornado that nearly destroyed the fine town.
I stopped here because I have a habit of just driving till i get to my destination and never seeing the cool things that are right under my nose that I drive past. this was a really cool history lesson of the birth of a small town in the Midwest and the things that determine where people settle. (the water well)this is claimed to be the largest "hand dug" well in the world and I believe it. this thing is LARGE.and at 50 cents per day wages (from their writings). this would have been a daunting task.WAY cool.also, it has a big display in pictures and type of the tornado that flattened the whole town a few years back. awesome display of power and mother nature. if you go here, but a few items in the gift shop as it supports the museum and the town.
Very friendly staff on hand to share their personal experience during the tornado in 2007. Great display in the new well building and memorial outside.
Much more than a big well, although that is impressive in itself. The other history about the town of Greensburg was also well worth the visit.
We almost didn't stop here. We were on a cross country trip and trying to make good time to get to our next stop. But we needed a break from driving in the wind so we stopped. The two kids working there didn't seem all that thrilled or friendly. The military discount only applies to the active duty member (which as a veteran myself kind of bugs me) but if the entrance fee goes to good use, so be it. The amount of information is fantastic. The building is nice. The devastation the town experienced with the tornado in 2007 is mind boggling and heartbreaking. To see the resiliency of the people and the incredible growth of sustainability minded building is impressive and inspiring. The well is a marvel. I would recommend to family and friends to stop by if they are going to be in the area.
My daughter and I did a roadtrip just to get out of Wichita and see somethings and decdided to hit this spot. I had been to Greensburg about 8 months after the tornado destroyed it so I didnt know what to expect. What my daughter noticed was how new everything was...and it occured to me that I had never been in a new town and since 95% had been destroyed that is what we were in. The Well museum did a great job of showing old and new Greensburg..it was just a great exhibit. I thought it might make me sad to visit but I actually left the town with a great deal of hope in my heart. If you have a chance go see it!
Just knowing that the poor town of Greensburg was basically wiped off the map by a massive tornado and has rebuilt as an all green community is amazing in itself. The Largest Hand Dug Well is even cooler! I visited the well many years ago and seeing it now....so much has been done to improve the visiting experience. The site offers loads of information and going down the well isn't as scary as it once was (stairs are very secure and my mother even ventured down this time.) We visited not too long before closing so not many visitors were there which made our trip very pleasureable. The spiral staircase not only goes down but up as well into a very nice 360' viewing area. The only downside there was it was getting dark and we couldn't see!http://www.bigwell.org/
This was a neat side trip for us. They have really done a great job rebuilding the town and this attraction after the 2007. There is a well-documented history of the well construction and the tornado that destroyed the town. The entire center is well designed and laid out for easy access and browsing. A person can descend into the well by a well designed flight of stairs. it was quite educational and interesting experience.
Clean, proffesional, and very interesting. It's museum was efficient, honest, and engaging. Allow 20 minutes (35 if you plan to down the well).
There is an entrance fee, but lots of information on the well and the area, old history and recent events.
