Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our winery. We had a great time with your group. As we thought about it the next day, our wines were being tasted by individuals representing over 40 states at the same time. Thank you again, and we hope to see you again soon!
Okay, I know what you are thinking and you're right... The grape varietals that you are used to do not grow in Kansas. But there are varietals that you may not be familiar with that will surprise and delight you! I did not know many of the grape varietals that I tasted at this winery and I am familiar with New World wines and many French, German, and Spanish grapes. First, let me say that the trip down a dirt road is worth doing! The tasting room is as modern and inviting as any in Sonoma or Napa. They pour a lot of wines! There is something for every palate and even sparkling wines that are made in the methode champenoise. Hand Riddled! That is reason to go right there. These varietals are flowery and fruity. I am going to have a blast pairing them with foods! I am really going to get some exotic fruits and great imported cheeses and make these wines the center of attention in my next dinner party. Think blueberry stilton, three cream brie, Roquefort with walnuts and honey. Pineapple and apricot will go with a couple of the whites! This fellow's roots are in France and his family is proud of his accomplishments!! You will be too! Go in with a desire to learn some new grapes and watch the New World change!! They are great for just a refreshing wine for brunch or just a bottle with friends on a front porch! I know that we sometimes get in a hurry when on the freeway, but take the time to make this stop, you will be glad you did!
If you love antiques and locally-produced wines, Paxico, Kansas, is definitely worth a stop! My adult daughter and I stopped and spent a couple of hours wandering the antique shoppes in Paxico. At the exit is a winery and another one in Paxico. Both are worth a stop! I purchase two bottles of Kansan wines, one dry for me, one sweet for my wife. Peggy's Antique Shoppe in Paxico is a friendly place and I chatted with Peggy herself while my daughter shopped to her heart's content. Great selection of items at Peggy's and the other shoppes we visited. Spent some time chatting with a man who is retiring from the antique business and has put his toy store in Paxico on the market. Worth a stop -- the entire downtown of this small town is dedicated to antique shoppes and specialty shoppes.
We wandered in while antiquing downtown. It's less of a winery/tasting room and more of a store with a counter where you can try some wine. All the grapes are grown in Kansas. We tried most of the reds, and they each had a unique and interesting flavor. We meant to stop back to purchase a bottle later in the day (didn't want it to sit in the hot car all afternoon), but it got too late and they were closed. We wouldn't drive back to Paxico just for this wine; however, if we're in town or passing through again, we will certainly pick up a bottle or two. They were a great price for local wine.
We found this winery on Facebook. Great people and excellent wine. Who knew that Kansas made such excellent award winning wine? It's nice to see people offering local family made products in a mega store dominated world. We liked everything we tasted and ended up buying a half case. Let's just say it didn't last long. ;) We will be back often!
We found Prairie Fire Winery on the internet http://www.prairiefirewinery.com/ and decided to take a day trip. Paxico is a gem! Get off the highway (I-70 just west of Topeka) and go into town (there is another winery at the interstate but we have not yet visited it). The shops are right around the "S" curve.... The Winery shares the building with the Prairie Ghost Too art gallery featuring southwest themes: paintings, jewelry, clothing, books and many more items. But all of this frames the wines. The hosts were so nice and patient with us. Several other guests arrived as we tasted and shopped, local people and travelers both - I think it is a good sign when the locals are patrons! We were treated to tasting as many of the products as were opened and given a colorful description of each and every one. The style of the winemaking is "old country;" the flavors are unique and distinctive - and I do mean distinctive. We will be back!
