Pulled over for a rest and hotel stay. Toured the town and found it old and vacant. The train depot was great; original and beautiful. Many neat statues along the way.
We met Charlie at the Boot Hill B&B and decided to take the walking tour with him. He stopped and talked about each character on the Trail of Fame and gave us a great history lesson.
Of interest! Walked the area looking it over and enjoyed the information and stroll! We took pictures of the steam train, Wyatt Earp and the Long Horn steer. We visited the depot and collected pamphlets about the area and took snaps of Marshall Dillon. I read that Dodge is known as the "continuously" windy town in the US, and that was pretty much correct. It was fairly hot 96 one day and we noticed we did not perspire due to the type of dry air on the prairie.
Very interesting tour with a great US Marshall narrating tour. He tells great stories and has personal experiences with some of the Gunsmoke cast
The Trail of Fame is only interesting and fun if you grew up watching Gunsmoke. I loved it and it was fun going up and down the streets finding all the actors/characters. I had to take their pics. These are (I'm assuming) bronze inserts placed randomly through out Dodge City old town in the sidewalk.
The tour guide we had was Charlie. He was a police officer in Dodge City and was great. He met most of the hall of fame people during his life time and had fascinating stories to tell about them. I would definitely suggest that anyone taking the walking tour ask for Charlie. We learned alot while we were on the tour as well. Can't beat honestly and true life stories.
One of the best story tellers we have ever met, his family has lived in Dodge for 4 generations. He gives the walking tour free, all you have to do is call his number and he will be there in 15 min. The tour takes about an hour and half. Wear walking shoes.
We started this walking tour but didn't finish it. A lot of it are markers and what was. The city didn't do much to preserve the buildings.
Get a map from the visitor centre and do the tour yourself of old Dodge town. Look for the hall of fame on the sidewalks. Start at the statue of Wyatt Earp and then progress with the map to view heroes of the west and the the TV series Gunsmoke. Dodge City is a friendly town and you should get the hell into Dodge
Interesting but I go the feeling we missed something. I didn't get the "bug" to seek out more memorabilla. Maybe we missed a directory or something.
My husband, myself and 2 friends did this tour and found it to be very informative. The tour was on a trolley bus which was quite comfortable. Our first stop was at the Dodge City Information centre and the ladies thee were very helpful. They have a map of the world and ask you to place a pin into your home area. My hubby and I were quite pleased as we were the first ones there from Tasmania this year. I was surprised at how many had been there from Australia.. Just shows that Aussies are out and about everywhere. :)
Pretty poor, unless you're a fan of an old 1950's western show on TV.But once you've been to the museum there's not much else to do in downtown Dodge City apart from looking at the medallions set in the sidewalk...
Charlie came to Boot Hill Bed & Breakfast to welcome us to Dodge City. We were fascinated at his knwledge of the area around Boot Hill. If you go to Dodge City stop by the visitors center & ask for Charlie or better yet stay the night at the Boot Hill Bed & Breakfast and get his business card. We loved our time at Boot Hill!!
Our personal guide, Charlie Meade, is a Dodge City treasure. He conducted our Trail of Fame walking tour and I would hazard a guess that there is no one as knowledgeable about the history of the area as Charlie. We learned so much-we could have listened for hours. His behind-the-scenes information about the Gunsmoke show and the cast was so informative and he shared some of his history as a deputy Marshall himself. We weren't the only ones who benefited from his expertise; others we ran into had only good things to say about his tour. If we go back to Dodge, we will definitely look him up.
We spent the night in Dodge City and toured the town. The replicia of the orginal Dodge City closed after labor day so we missed the tour . All we could view was thru a tall metal fence, like the Long Branch saloon etc. Disappointing the tour was closed. We drove to the statue of Wyatt Earp on Wyatt Earp Blvd. and also further down the Blvd. was a statue of a longhorn cow and we did take pictures of the two statues. There was a row of old buildings with a picture of a cowboy in each separate window on the upper floor looking down at the parking lot which did make it different. We were let down by expecting more than what we saw , maybe if the replicia of the town of Dodge City had been open it would have been more enjoyable. We drove miles out of our way heading East from Colorado only to find what we had traveled so far to see was closed for the season!!!!
