Maybe you were too young, or maybe you never even saw the movie; but this is the spot, the fabled "Bali Hai" and there is no other beach like it in the world! Beautiful arc of white sand, gentle, shallow wading for hundreds of feet from shore, but still with real ride-able surf beyond. Oh, and the view! Lush forest behind, with the magical mountains to your left. AND a wade-able little river with a clear, cool stream of fresh water feeding the sea, just right for a post-ocean rinse. Wow - even decent bathrooms and a pier.
A very busy beach as it's iconic. Very nice to stop to watch a sunset here or pack a picnic. We usually walk to the end of the pier and snap photos. Great beginner surfing in the area with consistent waves. Great place for families.
Beautiful beach and a must see however parking is limited. Go at least to see the wet cave and the dry cave.
My favorite beach on the island! This is where I wanted to go each day. Just could not get over that stunning view of the mountains. Nice, wide beach and just spectacular!
If you enjoy long leisurely walks on the beach, heading north on Kauai will get you to some great areas that are perfect. From Hanalei to "the end of the road" there are great options. We mere there on March 2nd and the beaches were not crowded at all. Parking at most beaches can be in short supply, but we were able to quickly park at a couple of them and took some great walks. Saw some great surfing, Waves were impressive, at one spot we took some great pictures of the waves crashing into the rocks. We stayed in the Lihue area, so the drive north was about 65 minutes. There is plenty to see on the way there and back. Worth the drive for a great day on the beach. Stopped at some small craft shops, Hawaii soap and Candle store, and other sites on the way back.
Ok I didn't stay in any hotel motel etc just stayed on the beach that's what I'm reviewing! One stunning adventure after another- from the diving birds on the north shore cliffs to the river surfing where it hits the sea - to the dragon's- back of the actual Hanalei( home to Puff the Magic Dragon) even the Taro fields accentuating the ancient Hawaiians staple food were just fascinating and unforgettable. All this while swimming and snorkeling at 75 degrees year- round and sun kist bodies all around We'd ride stop at any beach to surf swim or picnik. Kauai is a place of laid- back charm magic and excitement - so unlike the city atmosphere of Honolulu - pure Hawaii in the country - A total thumbs up. Aloha is fluently spoken here
We recently rented a beautiful beachfront home right across the street from Hanalei beach and pier and it was spectacular! The views from sundown to sunset were always magnificent, and the beach was always clean and never crowded. Our twin grandsons totally enjoyed their daily time in the water and playing in the sand. Nice to have lifeguards on duty as well. You can pop into scenic "downtown" Hanalei in a matter of minutes to buy lunch to go from a number of delicious eateries. Or--get an ice cream at Pinks!!
We spent two different days on the Hanalei Beach. It is so large that depending where you set up you can choose small to large waves. The area in the middle of the bay by the life guard tower had larger waves for body surfing and towards the pier the waves were smaller for children to play in. The beach is pretty clean for the most part. We were there during Presidents weekend and the beach was crowded near the pier but we still had a great time.
Love this Island and especially this beach! Great mix of tourists and locals. Being blended makes it more social and realistic to see how life is in this beach paradise! So close to all amenities and when you are there, you will never want to leave!!
I camped here while visting Kauai. What is really nice is that you are so close to Hanalei for dinner or anything you might need, but for $5 you can throw your tent down on the beach and listen to waves wash in. The showers here have a cover, but they are a far cry from a hot hotel shower and the bathrooms left a bit to be desired. The downside to camping anywhere in Hawaii is the Roosters at 4am. I felt very safe and everyone at the park was friendly. I had emailed the park board about a permit and they informed me to just buy one from the ranger in the park for $5 instead of $3 from the office or ahead of time. The problem is that there is no ranger constantly at the park, they come though in the evening and shortly after the roosters start crowing... The ranger who sold me a permit in the morning was a bit surly, but the sun wasn't up yet. Beautiful park.. with multi million dollar houses along the bay. You can wake up and go to bed with the same view and experience for only $5.
In the weeks we spent there the locals said there was epic surf and it surely looked like it. Can get crowded on the eastern end but just a short walk west is well worth the effort.
