The drive is a continuous view of the island. Watch out for bikers as I can see why people get into accidents. The top was windy and cold assaid before, and even with this information i worea skirt, wow its cold! Even being from Canada! The crator itself has some amazing history and sights to be seen! The entire experience is worth it!

Fabulous experience. Absolutely gorgeous views. Tour guide Bob was a wealth of information. Very very cold. Amazed at people up there in shorts/with babies.

I loved Maui but there are alot of adventures you can do on own with rental car for free!!! I would not spend $$$$ on tours unless you have no ability to drive a rental car. This park is one of biggest highlights of trip sunset is just as good as sunrise.Take the road less followed and choose sunset like we did.Well worth it! Less tourists too at that time.

This was a great tour. Temps rise and fall with the sun and wind. It was 27 degrees while we were there. A must see

I think I'd have preferred a cabin, but we hiked in and set up a tent for the night. We rented the tent and sleeping gear which was better for the beach than for the crater. It was windy and cold, so we wore everything we had. Still slept like a log. The views from inside the crater at sunset and watching the stars at night were awesome. We hiked out early so as to watch the sunrise from the summit. What a fantastic time. Highly recommend to anyone who doesn't mind a rough adventure.

At 10,000 feet above the clouds, you can see the summits of the two volcanos in the Big Island covered with snow. It had snowed the morning we went but had melted by the time we got there. So, dress appropriately.

It took us a couple hours to get there but it was worth the drive. Under the shade of the rocks along the road near the top there were icicles. We walked the final trek up to the top to look into the crater. It was awesome. It's 10,000 ft and cool so wear a jacket.

The drive to the top was thrilling and the drive down is not for the weak of heart. I guess it looks scarier than it really is.....Winding and turning series of switchbacks in the road rise to an altitude of over 10,000 feet. There were some athletically inclined souls riding up on bicycles and even more daring souls riding back down on bicycles. We did neither of those things. The ride up is breathtaking and I am told that the summit is a place to experience sunrise like no other. We arrived later in the day when the sun was already shining down on the partial cloud layer that we passed driving up and then, below, on the beautiful beaches we could see. The altitude can cause some difficulties. But if you are otherwise healthy and take it slowly, the views from the short hikes are spectacular. The views into the crater itself are amazing. The short walks were relatively easy ones and worth the time to hike. There are also longer hikes that go into the crater itself. Didn't have the time to do them but the trails were visible from where I stood. Needed binoculars or a telephoto lens to see them clearly but they looked quite inviting. When I return, I will take a full Camelbak and hiking pole and devote the full day that would clearly be needed to make a hike through the crater! Haleakalā on Maui coupled with a visit to Volcanoes National Patk on the Big Island of Hawaii makes for a good appreciation for how the islands that comprise Hawaii came to exist. Haleakalā an be very cold and is ALWAYS windy. Dress warmly and in layers. There is a website that is dedicated to providing actual technical weather data for the peak. One "cold" and rainy day in Maui (translated to in the 60's), I checked to see what was happening on the summit and saw actual temperatures listed as well below freezing and winds that made them seem even more arctic. Pick a clear day and go. It is a place not to be missed. Just tell the squeamish ones not to look out the car windows during the drive. If you are lucky, you might even spot one of Hawaii's rare native geese, the nēnē, which inhabit this place.

This is an excursion you must take when on Maui. The entrance fee is only $10.00 and is good for 3 days for admission to the summit and Kipahulu areas of Haleakala National Park. The road is long and winding but you get some fatastic views even when it is raining and overcast. It is a slow climb to the summit. At the summit, we could see very little as the wind was howling and blowing cold (34 degrees). The hut at the summit gave a brief respite from the wind and rain. We drove down to the visitor center and got a better view of the crater as the clouds were at the higher elevation. The best views were at the next lookout. We saw a few Nene. Definitely bring a jacket.
