good history to learn !! very informative ...and sad too.... this made me reflect.. for this tragedy , 2 cities in Japan suffer so much... ....
We visited this great Museum on afternoon, when it was cloudy and we couldn't go to the beach! I am so glad we did. Lots of local history and fascinating stories and displays. Admission is free, but would be worth paying money for!!!
First, the good news. They had a special exhibit on the role of Japanese-American soldiers in the Pacific theater in WWII that was very good. But, the rest of the exhibits were tired and old. The bottom line of any museum trip is whether I learned anything. And, other than the special exhibit, the answer here was no. Admission was free, so you have nothing to lose, but don't expect much.
The portrayal of the 100th and 442d Japanese units was well done and solidified their place in American History. The special salute to General Eric Shinseki was also a treat.
Wow! Great information about what happened here on Hawaii! So much information that it is almost overpowering. Pictures are great also as well as the personal information. A lot of reading, so make sure you allow enough time. Don't miss this one.Paul
Hubby and I spent two very educational hours here this morning on an overcast Honolulu day. History goes back to King Kamehameha's victory over the islands and tribal fighting up through to WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam. I knew only a little about Japanese-Americans and their internment during WW2 and almost nothing about Hawaiian-Americans of Japanese descent and the part they all played during the war and learned so much! Excellent displays and a couple of good short films. It is very cold in the museum so ladies bring a cardigan! Also I would not recommend the museum for young children - they would quickly be bored. Suggest 10 years and older - lots of weapons on display. My only criticism is the music that is played constantly in the museum - it detracts from the movies that are playing and makes it very hard to concentrate on reading the exhibit info. Also go upstairs to the second floor to see the Gallery of Heroes and an interesting exhibit on the U.S. Army corps of engineers. Also a Cobra attack helicopter and tanks etc outside. Museum closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Large military display of World War 2 housed in a bunker. Air-conditioned and free entry. Gift shop also on site.Must see if you you are military buff. Well set out in different rooms with excellent collection of military items and history of the war. Actual footage the attack on Pearl Harbour and you can hear radio messages sent. in my opinion is it very well done. I went there as my husband wanted to see it but I was actually very interested once I started looking.Well worth a visit.
For WWII pacific history buffs this is one of the best, plus it's free. I worked for the National Park system for 15 years, this is right there for quality.
Nice place, free, covers alot of eras and nestled on grounds adjacent to Hale Koa military hotel. Very cool.
We are so sorry that your attempts to visit the museum have been on days that we are normally closed - Sundays and Mondays, or during renovations. Our hours are posted on our website at: www.hiarmymuseumsoc.org and we continually update TripAdvisor and the webpage if there is a change to regular hours of operations. We are pleased that in the recent year there have been updates to the museum and thank our donors whose generosity have allowed us to do so. Hopefully, your next visit to Hawaii will allow you to visit. Aloha!
Utilizing a gun emplacement and bunkers that could not be demolished. Perfect use and ideal for subject matter categories. Displayed both sides of various conflicts and time periods.
As had been noted in our TripAdvisor description, the museum was closed for renovations. The Hawaii Army Museum Society purchased new carpeting for the entire first floor of the U.S Army Museum of Hawaii. We were able to do this through the generous donations of visitors from around the world. The museum is much larger than it appears from the exterior and the replacement involved a good bit of work and a thorough cleaning upon completion. We are so sorry that you attempted to visit while the work was taking place and we do hope that you will return when next on Oahu. Aloha!
If you are into war history this is a excellent place to learn more. its mostly on WWII but has some other stuff. the museum is much bigger inside than what it looks like on the outside. My family and I spent about 3 hours there.
We stopped in to kill some time before the ride to the airport, and glad we did. Too bad the first floor was closed, but we were greeted cheerily by a volunteer who had us sign in and gave us some directions around the museum.I would love to come back once the first floor is open, otherwise they have a decent and nicely priced gift shop.
