帕拉奥州立公园

We took one whole day during our stay on Molokai to explore the west end. Basically everything west of Kaunakakai. This was one of the places we visited. It was nice to get a view of the shore and town where Father Damien lived and worked. The wife wanted to go up to Phallic Rock, but came to her senses once she realized we were both wearing flip flops. Beautiful parks, with some nice short hikes.

The ride to Palaau State Park was nice. They have restrooms and would be a great place to picnic. There's a short walk to the Kalaupapa Lookout. There's gorgeous views of Kalaupapa National Historic Park and Peninsula. There's also a short and easy hike to the Phallic Rock. We did the "hike" in our slippers and everyone was else we saw was in their slippers, too. We got eaten by mosquitoes, though. Bring bug spray!

Great place to take family for a picnic. Located upcountry Molokai this place offers a cool, calm retreat and plenty of space for kids to play. Bathrooms always clean and stocked because caretaker lives adjacent to park. Short walk to Kalaupapa Lookout.

Kalaupapa lookout is definitely worth going, especially it's only a few minutes walk from parking. Although once you get to north side of island, temperature seems to drop a few degree, so make sure you bring a light jacket in the car, since its very windy as wellIn terms of the lookout itself, it is as beautiful as a lookout can get, the expansive view of the ocean was amazing, and you see the historical park below, it is great because we couldn't book the mule ride down to actual kalaupapa town.

The Kaluapapa Lookout is only a couple minutes walk from the parking lot, and is an incredible view of the peninsula. Its well worth the few minutes it takes for the view. It will probably be windy at the viewpoint.

駐車場に車を止めトレイルを歩きました。フォーレストは針葉樹が生い茂っていました。展望台に到着すると美しい景色に圧倒されます。モロカイの北側の景色が一望できます。ハンセン病と戦ったダミアンの物語がパネルにつづられていました。１８００年代の歴史で神父様はベルギー人でした。とても感動でした。

モロカイ島の北部にあるパラアウ州立公園。駐車場から手入れされた道を歩くと、５分ほどで到着。溶岩が流れ出て平らになった土地が右下に見えます。周りから隔絶された土地をを利用して、カメハ５世の命令により１８６６年からこの土地にはらい病の患者が隔離されたそうです。１８７３年にダミアン神父が来るまでは、なんの手当も無く死んで行く人も多かったそうです。そんな悲しい歴史が、この常夏の島にあるなんて今まで知らなかったのですが、バケーションだけでなくこういう歴史を知ることも大切だと思いました。カラウパパの町は一般人は立ち入り禁止。この地域には患者の招待がある人か、ツアーなどに参加しないと入ることはできません。
