We stay here at lest once a sumer, nice beach, clean facilities. Love going to the parnell tower and the hamburger haus in dundee. Not as crowded as some of the other parks get in the summer.
We just came home from a three night, four day trip to Mauthe Lake campground. This was our first experience there. BEWARE: the map posted by the forest service online when you book is not accurate and doesn't show exactly how sites and pit toilets are laid out. When booking, we chose site #432. As we were driving in, we got scared because most of the sites were very small and never would have fit our big tent and trailer. Also, most sites were completely gravel. When we arrived at our site, we saw that it was indeed big enough for all our gear, but it was adjoining the next site-like a double family site. There was literally no space and only a couple of bushes as a barrier. In order to fit into these sites, you have to put your tent/trailer right next to your neighbor. It was very uncomfortable as one night we had a guy next door who was waking up with night terrors screaming. The next night a large group of partiers stayed up all night drinking and fighting. When you have kids, this is not cool. BEWARE: there are no rangers on site. If you have a problem like we did, you will get very little support or help. Finally at three in the morning, the police showed up an hour after being called. Not cool at all. Also, this site is located near the pit toilets, and if it had been hot, we would have smelled them. Luckily it was cold. It had been raining a lot, and the trail by the lake was closed, and our site was a big mud pit. On the up-side, the lake is absolutely beautiful, and the beach is small and nice. There is a snack shop and a playground by the beach. There is running water by the beach and one shower building, which was really far away. We will probably never stay there again.
We love the Kettle moraine. Great place to visit with a hike, biking, and/or fishing. There seems to be something new we discover with each visit. It's worth staying for a few hours or more.
Have stayed in both state parks, exceptionally clean bathrooms/showers, nice and quiet, with good beaches. Long Lake can be busy with boat traffic. The "lake to lake" bike trail is 6.5 miles of gently rolling hills - just right for families, even down to the 5-6 year old stage. Enjoy!
We traveled on 45 through small towns, saw dairy farms, traveled along the LONG River, The trees in the forest are lusciously green and full. The grounds are clean like little gnomes come out at night to clean. You don't see any trash on the side of the roads. I was totally impressed with the whole area.
Prettiest part of the Wisconsin Ice Age Trail so far. We are walking from east to west, started in Sturgeon Bay in mid June.
Beautiful forest, scenic lakes, lovely, easily navigable trails, but there were few signs to indicate trail entrances.
Great campground on Mauthe Lake which is a non motorized boat lake. Nice sites, some are small but most have electric.
