I grew up knowing the people in this area and the SunRise Orchard has been family owned/operated for years. It is still my favorite orchard to go to for apples and other products that they sell, like the Cider Doughnuts. The customer service is great and you can tell that the service has been handed down from generation to generation with the same values. It is well worth the trip to stop there. There is a lot going on at the Orchard.
Always a busy place during apples season. Also a wonderful drive this time of yr with all the leaves changing. They only take cash or checks... No Credit cards accepted. Understandable since they are only open a few months a yr. Don't forget your apple spiced donut.
I've done a rewrite of "Suedrs review" title. However: review is written from a very selfish view. I always start the trip thinking. . . . . I don't see why we drive 2 1/2 hrs., one way, to buy some bags of apples but we do. Maybe it's the scenic fall drive across NE Iowa nearly the length of Wisc. Maybe it's "just because" it's a Fall tradition at our house. I'm not sure I can explain it in a review but. . . . . .Then I enter the building and the aroma of Fresh Apple Cider Donuts draw me in. At less than $8 a dozen, cheaper than any place back home for #1 Bakery fresh donuts. But don't think Sunrise Orchard is just donuts and apples. While MrsB picks out her apples, I shop around for the great jams and jellies. Black Raspberry, my wife's favorite. At about $6, a reasonable price. I find some quart jars of pickled baby beets. Here again at about $7, for me a "steal". I had to get 2 jars of each. It has to last a year. We come once every year but seldom oftener. We have had "the habit" for over 50 years.I want it to always seem like it was "worth while". And it is. oldbuck & MrsBI hope we didn't make a mistake only getting one dozen donuts. They may be gone before we get home. :o)
The trip into town is like looking a postcard. We come up from Florida to visit around the Iowa area but always stay long enough to go to Gays Mills & Sunrise Orchards before heading home. The scenery is beautiful & the apples are great.
Why I say this is simple, it is a tourist trap with high prices. Ridiculous indeed. Apples were many but the prices are out of sync. Restrooms are terrible. One would think that with the money that is spent here that they could at least have a decent restroom. Why go all the way to Gays Mills for over priced apples! It is a real cluster _ _ _ _ with all the people there. Needs a better traffic flow in and out of the orchard.
This orchard is amazing. Quite a variety of apples and apple products available. The best warm, apple donuts I've ever had. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Sunrise Orchards is the home of the apple donut and represents the best of Gays Mills' Applefest experience. The 2014 apple harvest is one of the best and the Honeycrisp flavor is over the top!The $83/bushel price for the best Applecrisps can be softened by the$53/bushel for 2nds. Unless you are really wanting to impress friends with the best, it is hard to differentiate between the two. In addition to sampling this tasty duo, make sure you take home their delicious apple cider and caramel apples. But the icing on the cake is savoring the autumn enhanced view while tasting your purchases.
Last week-end decided to go to Gays Mills for apples and other goodies. We thought with Apple fest the following week-end we would not have alot of crowds- wrong- everyone had the same idea as us. No matter we enjoyed this orchard as always- got apples and the famous apple cider donuts/pumpkin roll and carmel apples. so yummy. Very long lines but moved fast because they had so many people working. Look forward to coming every year.
This is the "home" area for my husband so we make it a point to visit during apple season. Great variety of apples most able to be sampled. Nice selection of local WI cheese, plus a large variety of jams, soups, and very inexpensive real maple syrup. There is a lunch stand and a wonderful view across the road. This orchard can be extremely crowded during the weekends around Apple Fest so be warned and aware of traffic and substantial crowds.
The best place in the Midwest for a wide variety of delicious apples, cider, and apple cider doughnuts. Doughnuts are made on location, and can be frozen for eating later. Large selection of apple varieties; our favorites are the Golden Supreme, Jonagold, Honey Crisp and Jonathon's.Recommend going mid-week, as I think crowds are much less than on the weekends.
We usually do a yearly "apple run" to Wisconsin in the fall and prefer this orchard above the rest. Mainly because of the variety of things for sale and the quality of the apples. This year's crop of honey crisp are outstanding. Be prepared to fight the crowds. Went on a weekend and there is barely room to move. The surrounding countryside is beautiful.
The Teaches who run Sunrise Orchard sure know their apples and they sell a ton of them. All kinds of apples and they look so bright and shiny. Two of my favorites, Cortlands and Jonagolds are special. They know just when to pick them so they are delicious. You will love this place and please go watch them make their Apple Cider Doughnuts, what a treat. Amazing place to visit.Rodney B. PDC, WI
I am a native of the area and I love Sunrise Orchards! They have a great selection and the people are very friendly. Going up on the Orchard Hill is a must if you are in the area.
