We attended the Fall Festival and despite cold weather and rain, the volunteers were happy and friendly and put on a great reenactment of a cowboy train robbery! The camp has restrooms, concessions, gift shop, petting zoo and cages of kittens and bunnies for kids to go in and hold and pet.
This attraction involves a steam locomotive pulling a variety of different cars including cabooses a short distance back to a historical lumberjack camp which includes, among other things, a working blacksmith shop and a petting zoo. The lumberjack camp is actually quite interesting and we also took the forest tour which we really enjoyed (it is included in the cost of a ticket and we found it really worthwhile). Overall, this is one of the better steam tourist trains around. Prices were quite reasonable overall even though the actual train ride is fairly short. If you have any special interest in logging or forestry, this should be really interesting. Even if you don't, I still think most people would like it.
Yes, take a step back in time when life was simpler and enjoy the five minute ride on a real steam train through the woods! Very friendly and proud staff operate this train taking you back to a real logging camp. It is a quaint camp area with various buildings to view. The barn was a hit with our small grandchildren and 85-year-old grandpa, too. We enjoyed a brat at he choo choo restaurant, which was tasty. Stopped in the cracker barrel store, which is another old building and tasted and purchased some fudge. You have to remember you are visiting another era when life was simple, so relax and enjoy the history that went on here when it was a logging camp. The museum was very informational and we certainly learned a lot of interesting facts about logging and other historical information. Our family enjoyed their day at the camp and ride back to the parking lot in the caboose! If you are looking to escape back in time, take the family to this old fashioned adventure for a day of family time it is worth the expensive of the train ticket!
This attraction is the worst! Don't go if you are expecting any type of train ride experience. my wife and daughter and I went and it cost us $50. just for the train ride. which only has one straight track so it goes forward one way and backwards the other. Had it not been for the Cowboy experience that was going on in which cowboys stop and rob the train, each trip would only last approximately 5 min. once you get to "Camp 5" which used to be a real logging camp, there is not much to do. a very small petting zoo consisting of peoples pet dogs and cats, a few bunnies and goats. a small museum and nature trails. oh there is also a little trolley if you will where to cars are pulled by a truck that takes you through a forest trail and points out various plants. YIPPIE. The Cracker Barrel store, is not what you think small souvenirs and fudge, which is over priced and a small bbq which is overpriced and not very good. was Extremely disappointed in that we drove 2 hours from green bay for this because we wanted a "train ride". the Train Museum in Green Bay is MILES over this one even with their Lame train ride.
the cowboys were on the train with us. They were very friendly and really entertained the kids. These were the good guys. Than the train was attacked by robbers and our good guys ran them off. All in all lots of fun for all of us. When you get up to the lumber camp there is a petting zoo for the kids and a museum for all ages, nature ride and boat ride, food and entertainment all over the place.
the train ride definetly is very short, but still fun anyways, the concessions store seemed to be very un-organized when we were there, they mixed up several people orders, but the food was good, even tho we had to wait quite awhile for our correct order. Other than that everything else was great, i would suggest not sitting in the front for the forest tour if your going to be bothered by truck exhaust.. pick a seat further back. the pontoon boat tour was also quite short, but very peaceful and enjoyable, probably should be a little longer for the price ($5 per person). walking thru all the old building was very nice-- especially the blacksmith barn--- could have spent more time there, but this was the last building we went to and we were getting a little tired, the petting coral and barn was also very nice.... definetly a great place for kids, but as adults we also enjoyed it. Any one with kids from 4-14years old-- i would definetly recommend coming here, and adults that like history--- also a must.
We got there about 1:00pm. My 4 year old grandson had the time of his life touring the train, blowing the steam whistle and taking the ride and the woods ride. EVERYONE was extremely friendly and courteous. I perceived they were all truly interested in every customer getting the max enjoyment from the facility. The entire grounds is impeccably maintained and orderly. They have a little cafe that served hamburgers , pizzas and drinks. Perfect for the event. Nothing fancy, just filling and tasted fine. Very friendly and helpful servers. Wonderful history of WI lumber industry.DON'T MISS IT - ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE KIDS.
This was a very relaxing train trip. You leave the depot in Laona and first go backwards through Wisconsin forests. Then you cross the Rat River. You have the choice of riding in a cattle car, passenger coach, or a caboose. The caboose is a must! You can ride in the cupola and see even better views of the scenery. Then you arrive at the museum. Then you can stroll around and look at various logging exihbits. Then ride the train back.
Spent the day here with our 2 yr old and some friends. The kids and adults had a great time. Definitely spend the extra money and take the hay/pontoon ride! Will make it an annual trip.
My husband and I along with our 3 kids ages 5, 3, & 1 spent the afternoon going on this train ride and spending 2 hours at camp 5. The kids loved the steam train ride but it is very short. The petting zoo was a hit with all 3. They loved the little kittens and bunnies. They liked the forest ride and we liked the education. We also enjoyed the blacksmith shop. Expensive but the kids enjoyed. Not sure if we would go back.
I am a train enthusiast so I figured we would check this out on a rainy day. First of all the train itself is a refurbished vintage steam train and train cars which are beautiful. I enjoyed riding in the train cars especially on the way back we rode in the upper level of the one which was cool but does require some climbing. I also enjoyed the lumberjack museum at camp 5, it was very informative! The 2 negative things I have to say are that the cost of the ride is a bit on the pricey side($21) and the train ride itself was only a mile long so it was way too short for the amount they charge!
The "Lumberjack Steam Train" operates short (1 mile each way) trips from Laona into the woods and return. The train is powered by a coal-fired steam locomotive, and includes open-window cars and cabooses in which passengers may ride.
My 2 grandsons (age 6 and 15) and I took the steam train to the camp 5 and it was a good time. We also took the forest tour which is included in the ticket price which told us about current foresting techniques. It was good learning time for the boys because we live in the city. There is a petting zoo, a working blacksmith shop, an old fashioned candy store where I was able to get burnt peanuts which I just love. They also have a food stand which is a little pricy but every thing was about $4. The food was good. This place is a must see for kids.
We had a great time on the train ride. The kids loved the petting zoo and the wagon ride through the forest. The museum and blacksmith shop was less interesting for the kids, but the adults enjoyed it. We also saw the lumberjack show. It was a great way to spend an afternoon!
Lets just say you take a short ride to a small village with goats and things to feed and that is pretty much it. the train takes the same route back. Save your money for somtheing else!
