This Planetarium was built by had by the owner and he shows the passion for his place. Learned a lot about the universe by visiting.
Took my grandson to visit when he was visiting from Florida. He was 6 years old and absolutely loved it. Very educational and the owner gave grandson personal attention.. Would highly recommend!
Kovac Planetarium is a heart-felt tribute to the heavens. A true labor of love. I learned about the constellations and stars, which was great. But I also appreciated the tactical and creative energy and the dedication over a long time that went into creating this structure. The story of the Planetarium's construction is as mesmerising as the show itself--and that's saying something!
Reluctantly went at the request of friends. Thought it was more to educate kids. Boy was I wrong. Great learning experience for young and old.Owner and creator has done a magnificent job in transforming his passion into a reality that all can enjoy.
My wife and I took a 10 day tour of Wisconsin last month. We saw lakes by boat, sea caves by kayak, the Dillinger shoot out spot, the Dells and a lot of beautiful country, but the most interesting attraction was the Kovac Planetarium. Frank Kovac has, through grit, determination and love of astronomy built an impressive facility and he presents a fascinating, educational and entertaining program. If you are ever in the area of Rhinelander, WI don't miss this place! It is a short drive from Rhinelander and a little off the beaten path but well worth the trip. (Best to make a reservation) And by the way, if it weren't for Trip Advisor we wouldn't have known about this attraction. Thank you Trip Advisor! Tom and Carol Simi Valley, CA
Need a fun outing while visiting the North Woods? Try the Kovac Planetarium for a unique experience. Frank Kovac is living his dream being able to share his vast knowledge and enthusiasm with the public. All ages will enjoy the show. Frank rocks!
We were a group of nine, ages 2 to 65, and Frank included something to elicit a "wow" from each of us. We've seen the most famous planetarium shows in the U.S., and that's what they are...shows. This was an experience, Frank adjusts his presentation depending on each day's audience.Be sure to grab a neck pillow as you enter, and you might bring along a seat cushion for a little extra comfort.
This is a perfectly astonishing labor of love, dreamt and built by one man who as a kid was a wacky star gazer. Each star is painted in luminescent paint by hand; the whole rotates so you can see how the Northern Sky looks at any season of the year and time of night; interspersed is a wonderful talk with pictures of things such as falling meterorites, the bora aurealis or Northern lights and just marvelous relative sizes of various, planets, stars, galaxies.Do not miss this one.
Frank Kovac, step-by-step and without a blueprint, has built with his own two hands, over a ten year period, the largest mechanical globe planetarium in the world, in the middle of the woods of northern Wisconsin. The globe is tipped at a 45 degree angle, to match the latitude of where it sits. Every star was hand-painted, and every minute I spent listening to Frank enthusiastically tell the story (for who knows how many times?), I was filled with inspiration; this man accomplished the impossible, by remaining focused and resilient. The planetarium is about a 25 minute drive from Rhinelander and well worth the admission fee. You'll need to call ahead, listen to show times and then leave a message on Frank's answering machine - "reservations"- for (limited) seating inside the planetarium, for the hour-long show. It's quite an experience - and one for all ages - to hear about the building process of the planetarium, alongside the constellations, stars and galaxies.
Meet Frank: a genuine guy, creator extraordinaire, and a person with his initial greeting feels like a long lost brother! Deep in the woods he has built a planetarium like nothing I've experienced before and I've been to my share of planetariums. The hour is over and you just can't believe it, not only have you embraced his excitement but it appears this is the first time he's given this show. Well of course you know that isn't true but just a part of you believes it is true! Best money i have spent in a long time.
Visited several years ago and was amazed at the operation....all built by hand from one man's dream. Great story of the stars. Good for kids as well as adults. Better than planetariums I have seen in large cities.
Great view of the stars!! Unique way to see the constellations and planets of the night sky! Very reasonably priced also.
Don't let the exterior fool you. This may be one of the most surprising small attractions you've ever seen, especially if you're a friend of the skies. This man-made planetarium is a most unique experience, without having to travel to a large city and/or spend big $$. A professional sky show/lesson in the middle of the Northland hills and trees. You should definitely make it part of your day if you're in the area.
Kovac Planetarium....a Planetarium built by the owner himself is a one of a kind place. His knowledge and passion is amazing, and we are so glad that it is being passed on! Hearing that he built it himself, one might question it compared to a big city planetarium, but have no worries, it is definitely a Gem in a small town setting!
I went to the Planetarium with my school from Denmark and it was amazing. I enjoyed his vast knowledge of the working universe.
