If you have any interest in airplanes this is something to see. They have a small museum with a number of items but they repair and restore airplanes and they took us out into the hanger and we were able to talk to the folks as they were working on them. Very interesting day.
Here you have a group of folks who love aviation, planes and restoration of old flying machines. Air Heritage occupies a large hanger at the Beaver County Airport in Chippewa Township. They have several old aircraft onsite, several of which are being lovingly restored. My favorite is the C-47B which served during WWII. And then there's the "Thunder Pig", a C-123K which flies regularly. When you stop by you will find someone who is happy to show you around and give you the details on their projects. There's one gentleman building a British Supermarine Spitfire from the ground up. The workmanship is incredible!
I took my two grand children there in the summer. They got to walk around the hanger where planes are in different stages of being restored. Their great grand father worked on B-17's during WW 2 and there was one there to see and touch. There were even planes we could walk into. The kids enjoyed it, as I did, too. This is a great way to spend an afternoon when the weather isn't cooperating.
We have lived in the area about 8 years and finally decided to visit this museum. Upon first entering there is a small room which has many artifacts and items related to the military and general aviation. In the hangar, many people volunteer their time to work on planes where we could see what they were working on in addition to a myriad of different types of planes...old and new. The volunteer who showed us around enlightened us with many stories about the planes at this location, as some date back to WWII. There are also a few planes outside...the fighter jet and "Thunder Pig" especially caught our eyes. There is no fee to visit the museum, but after seeing how it helps restore our country's history, we became members. Definitely a neat place to visit. They also offer a few events throughout the year for special--we hope to attend the Aviation Appreciation Day this year!
The museum was even better than expected. The front of the hangar had a nice little museum dedicated to the military history of the Air Force. The displays, models and artifacts were well done and added to the anticipation of seeing the planes under construction in the hangar. We were warmly greeted by a volunteer who gave us a personal tour and explanation of ongoing projects. We were also able to see planes on the field and actually sat in the pilot's seat of a large cargo plane. For military enthusiasts there is even a research library to find histories of old units. It was a very enjoyable tour and experience.
