Unlike many museums, this is not a jumbled collection of stuff, but a museum that tells the story of the local area. In addition to the tales of logging camps and ferries across Lake Michigan and summer camps, they have a corner dedicated to local author Bruce Catton, whose memoir Waiting for the Morning Train gives us a sense of what it was like growing up in Benzonia in the early years of the 20th century. The museum is in the old Congregational church. Go visit!
Housed in an old Victorian church in the historical section of Benzonia, this museum houses a variety of objects and photographs of the history of Benzie County. Going there is a step into the past. They also have meetings of the Geneology Society, among other groups.
Well designed exhibits with fun and interesting information about the Benzie area. Programs throughout the year are informative and bring in local experts. Docents are friendly and well versed on the exhibits and very approachable. Everyone should make a stop while they are visiting the area.
This is the nicest local museum I have visited. The artifacts are nicely displayed, well lighted and labeled. There are a lot of items to look at, but they are not crowded together. If you are in the area, this is a great place to take a look at.
We REALLY enjoyed our visit to the Benzi Area Historical Museum. We spent an entire afternoon and must go back to see more. Our guide was knowledgable, helpful and very friendly. There's too much to see and learn in a short period of time. We had a personal guide for the two of us.
If you are up for some Benzie history, this is the place to go. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.
The Benzie Area Historical Museum is one of the best examples of what a great director and dedicated volunteers can do. Remarkable displays of area history and all accessible and interesting for children as well as adults. There is a one room school house open in the summer months as well.
