We love it here. Take your kids. The diamond crossing is a real treat and makes it special. These are rare and are hard to find a good observation point for but Durand has one. Be sure to check out the model RR layout and museum too.
The restored Durand train depot is impressive. The photographic history, the museum pieces, the restored building and the descriptions of the station in its hey day. It is still an operating station, although much less active than in past years, nice diamond crossing.
This is a well restored railroad station. The people here are very hospitable. The museum is very well done. This was a good place to watch trains but the train traffic has decreased.
I am definitely more than a bit biased towards this place - my family has a pretty significant history with the station and railroad (through my great-grandfather and his brother), so it was a special place for us to visit. While we were there the curator even showed my dad some new information they were adding about my relatives as part of the ongoing research and cataloging of history! This a small museum tucked away in a semi-active station that is well over a century old. At one point Durand, and this station, was the hub of all railroad activity in Michigan, so there is a great deal of history involved. The station is well-restored, and is a neat window into the past. The displays help to give a picture of life at the station and on the trains, and are worth a look. Especially cool was the display about the hobos riding the trains - I loved the information on the different signs they would leave for each other to pass along information about different trains and towns. As a photographer I found the large collection of old pictures a treat, and I spent a great deal of time just wandering the station and studying each and every one. Make sure you don't miss the second floor (I almost did) - it is lined with dozens of cool pictures to check out!The staff is very friendly and very helpful - they answered every one of our questions, and provided some great information for us.
being able to see the club in action, the amtrack comes through and the museum inside the depot knowledgable workers talk safety with children and adults alike, many tracks running through
This historic railroad station contains a railroad museum AND an Amtrak railroad stop. The train that runs from Chicago, Illinois to Port Huron, Michigan (and back), is called the "Bluewater Route".The railroad museum has lots of exhibits containing artifacts about the two rail lines that cross in front of this station. Of particular interest, are photos of train wrecks, and memorials of the michigan railroad workers. A local model railroad club regularly runs a large layout inside the museum (kids always enjoy watching the model trains as well as the real ones that pass by frequently). The "Durand Railroad Days" event in the springtime is a must for rail-fans and train-spotters.
