We visited in February, 2015, for an overnight package that included the horse drawn sleigh ride to view the elk followed by a 5 course dinner and wine tasting at a lodge in the woods. We stayed in a villa, with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The villa was very outdated, but clean. The sleigh ride was nice, although the off color jokes told by our guide were offensive at times. The lodge was beautiful, and the dinner provided was tasty with the exception of the pork, which was dry and very bland. The wines provided to accompany the meal and for the tasting were absolutely awful! Following dinner the owner actually did a sales pitch for some 'Velvet Antler' spray and supplements that were touted as being beneficial to health. When you pay that much for a package, both the poor wine and the sales pitch were most unwelcome! We certainly won't be back.
This is our second year to choose a COLD event for our New Years Eve. This was also our 20th wedding anniversary. We purchased the New Years eve package which included a great condo for 2 nights that could of slept up to 8 people, our breakfasts, elk viewing and wagon or sleigh ride pulled by HUGE horses. Once we were at the cabin in the woods we were fed 11 courses of a fabulous meal over the next 5-6 hours. Mike Ridley comedian and musician entertained us thru the night. After a very special evening we were dropped off (by horse and wagon) to our condo for the night. They had put bottles of champagne and classes in our rooms while we were gone. This is a family owned business that is well worth the drive to Northern Michigan to enjoy. In past years we had snow shoed & cross country skied, there wasn't enough snow this year for those activities but it was very relaxing to sit my the fireplace and read.
On a recent trip I was quit surprised to find how much I enjoyed this experience! During the summer this is a golf resort but come fall turns into the Thunder Bay Experience. We were treated to a carriage ride into the forest to a beautiful lodge. It is run buy a family to make money in the winter. A beautiful five course lunch & wine tasting was served! After that we regained the carriage to view the elk. They now raise there own because of the tuberculous the elk were getting from the deer. I was amazed how large they were. This would be great for families also. Would be beautiful at Christmas! We were there on a dreary & rainy October day, they gave us blankets to stay warm. I didn't think I would enjoy it, went with friends on a bus tour but I must say I did enjoy it very much!
The entire evening was amazing and our guide, Jerry, was so attentive and absolutely made it an evening to remember!!! From the hot cider drink during the carriage ride, to the elk, to the delicious 5 course meal prepared in a cabin in the woods every moment was memorable. I cannot recommend this elk viewing/5 course meal/wine tasting/carriage ride event enough and we are absolutely going to make this an annual event.
My entire experience, from arrival to departure was wonderful. Gracious hosts, an amazing horse drawn wagon ride to see Elk (and we saw many,) a delicious multi-course meal served in a charming cabin and overall hospitality made my visit both unique and memorable. I highly recommend this experience.
Haven't even been here 24 hours, and have been helped by 2 super people. Vince the maintenance man fixed our (main) broken plug so we could have electricity in our RV, and Brad the cable guy got us correctly hooked up for cable (RV-ing is new to us, and being only our 2nd trip, we were not familiar with the complicated protocol regarding our electronics hook up). Both employees went above and beyond what I would consider normal operations.Everyone speaks highly of the owner as a super nice guy, will be meeting him in a couple of days at the elk tour.
We recently enjoyed a wonderful stay at the RV Park adjoining Thunder Bay Resort & Golf Course in Hillman, MI. The park was well laid out (though you need to know that there are no shower facilities, so you'll need to be a self-contained RV) and immaculately kept. We really enjoyed the golf course, which was both challenging and beautiful. But, the best part of our stay was the Elk Viewing Dinner. It starts with a leisurely carriage ride (in winter it's a sleigh) through the many acres surrounding the resort, giving us a view of some very majestic elk (a herd which the owners purchased and take great care of), and stops that are long enough to get good photos. This is followed by a delicious 5 course meal (highlights were the pork roast cooked to perfection and the very tasty dessert) paired with numerous different wines. The two things that made this an excellent experience were: 1. the food was truly good - not what one would expect from an essentially "entertainment dinner ride"; 2. the owners and staff made us feel as though we were simply invited into their home to enjoy a good meal, prepared with care and served with friendship (we were never rushed or given the feeling that they'd rather be somewhere else, and they're sick of doing this). We highly recommend that you plan to stay at Thunder Bay Resort & RV Park and definitely enjoy the Elk Viewing Dinner. We hope to get back again to experience it with the sleigh ride in winter!
Thoroughly enjoyed the horse drawn wagon ride to view the elk. The 5 course meal was delicious with some great wine tasting. The rooms were very nice and all the staff very friendly and very accommodating. Very much worth it.
Although I was there just overnight for business, the experience was great. I am looking forward to going again when I can stay and really experience the entire resort. Dennis and Penny were very friendly and took the time to show me around. The staff in the restaruant were very friendly and smiled and took the time to chat. My room was very clean and all I needed was provided. This would be a great place to take a group for fun or business. I look forward to meeting Jack and his wife, the owners.
Although the temperatures were dipping to below zero by the end of the evening, we had a marvelous time. We joined 72 other guests ( there were no cancellations...hardy folks!!) and piled into horse drawn wagons for an hour ride through the woods. They provided heavy blankets to sit on and cuddle under. But I would recommend hand and toe warmers when it is THAT cold! Saw wildlife, deer and of course the magnificent elks. Able to get out and take photos. Each wagon had a very knowledgeable guide who made the trip fun and interesting. the 7 course dinner at their "log cabin in the woods" was well done and you had plenty of time to admire the antlers up close or sit around the fireplace. Trip back utilized a short cut, only 15 minutes or so. it was amazing to see the stars in the night sky..no city lights to dull the sparkle. Admit I was leery but it was a terrific evening and would do it again. Guide tip....avoid June blackfly season!
