This state park is located on a large lake in a tiny town. The park offers and super helpful, and friendly staff. In addition there are hiking and biking trails. A separate beach for our dogs to swim, and some Giant trees. This parks facilities were very clean and we enjoyed our experience so much, that we will make this trip yearly. Also you can rent canoes and kayaks and there are these water falls called ocqueoc falls that are a quick drive away and a must see. Amazing experience!
This is the oldest State Park in Michigan 1929 If you have a large RV you will not find a spot with enough room. You should visit this park take a lunch go to the beach, play golf, have fun good time
Great park to spend a quiet time with the family. We stayed on one of the parks lake front lots, where you could wade out several hundred yards so it would be great for someone who doesn't really swim. We heard loons and seen a bald eagle from our campsite. Restrooms are kept clean.
Our family of 13 just stayed at this state park. We booked sites 75 & 77. They were a little uneven which made it a little tricky for those of us who had tent, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I would say what was more inconvenient was the spaces were mostly rocks and almost no grass at least in our sites were. We chose our spots due to the close location to the more "modern" bathroom and there weren't 2 sites next to each other on the lake. The restrooms were kept clean. I personally noticed them cleaning the bathrooms 3 times on Saturday. It is a bit dated, but clean. They also had a family bathroom/shower which was very convenient since I have a 3 & 6 yr old. They had a nice area near the boat launch where the kids played often on the swings. This park was also nice because it wasn't really crowded like a lot of the other parks. We would defiantly return.
There were 14 people in my family that stayed for a four day trip. We had 7 adults and 7 children ranging in age from 14 to 10. We had four sites reserved by the water. The sites are a bit small compared to other state parks I have been to. However, I only saw the ones that were near me. The showers and flush toilets are in the center of the park. The other facilities are outhouse toilets. The park is kept very clean. My site was next to one of the outhouse toilets. I was surprised at how many times they came in the day to check and clean. Our sites were a bit rocky and it was a challenge to pitch four tents. The rangers patrol the park often and we were actually a bit loud after 10 pm (quiet time) and were told by the rangers to please keep the noise level down. The kids went on many hiking excursions and were able to see deer pass through the park and crayfish in the lake. The park is in a perfect spot to take day trips to Mackinaw and Indian River for tubing. My only complaint is the many biting flies, spiders and earwigs that made their homes on our tents for only being there for four days. I guess that all comes with camping near water. All in all, the trip and accommodations were great! I would come to this park again.
We stayed at Onaway State Park for the weekend. We camp in our small trailer, We thought it was very nice. Yes some of the campsites are not real level but there are several that are. The restrooms are older but very clean. Very nice newer showers. The staff was very nice. Even the young ones. There are a lot of hiking trails in the area. We watched a couple of beautiful sunsets over black lake. We will for sure be back.
The park needs some overall work. There is an old shower house and bathrooms near the waterfront campsites that is on the website but is closed. It should be torn down and rebuilt. It advertises modern showers but you have to drive to get to them if you are camping near the waterfront area. The campsites that are near the water don't have modern anything, except electricity. There are water outlets but you have to walk a bit to them. Unless you have a camper, prepare to go to the potty in an updated outhouse. The place is run by young kids, which we did not appreciate due to the fact that some campers get loud and won't respect younger workers. Overall, it was kept clean and maintained. The staff that was there was polite. The younger workers don't know much either. They weren't supervised very well and weren't trained. We had to call Cheboygan to get answers. We probably won't return to this campground. The campsites are not level. Ours had a big tree stump in the middle of it that we have to maneuver around in order to place our tent. I think they should lower the price if they aren't going to put any more work into this place. $22.00 is a lot considering state forests and national forests cost less and offer more.
I'm torn because I want this park to do well but I like the peace and quiet this place has to offer and don't want it to change. Stayed at campsite #13 right on Black Lake. Gorgoeus views everyday, swimming, kayaking, amazing starry night skies, peacefully setting without the crowds. Negatives - Black Lake can get very windy, had to take my awining down twice have to have a fire across the road three of 8 nights we stayed. However they do need to get the funding for a new bathroom house. Vault toilet is a little nasty but you get used to it. I will not only come back but I will stay on the water again despite the wind, although upper sites look nice as well just a little unlevel. A true little known hidden gem that was exactly what we wanted. We will be back!
We booked a site here last minute for the fourth of July weekend because it was the only park we could still get a spot in. The area is very nice and over all the park is also. The site we were on was very unlevel and awkward though, and it took us a good amount of time to figure out how to set our camper up. We ended up having to put it in backwards (the door facing the back of the site) which was okay, but not what we usually do. The electrical box was also pretty far from where we could put the camper, and we noticed a lot of the sites were the same way, so make sure you have an extension cord! (We talked to another couple setting up and they had to go into town to buy one) The bathrooms were decent, but definitely older than most state parks. There is a small beach that is pretty rocky, but still pretty and the kids had fun. We would stay here again, but we wrote down a couple of sites that were set up better than the one we were on. The sites down by the water looked nice, but a little cramped.
Excellent ORV Trails nearby!!!! Good Playground For The Children. Clean Park with Reasonable Rates. Onaway Town Has Great 4Th Of July celebrations!!!! A Must See :-)
We had booked a site without seeing the campground first. We decided to go look at our site before we took our trailer. A good thing, we have a 36 ft fifthwheel. The sites are very small and the road is very narrow. We wouldn't have been able to manoeuver the trailer in the campground. There also was not a lot of grass, it was very sandy so to say. We bring our grandson and it would have been a chore to keep the dirt out of our trailer. We do like to camp in the states, this just wasn't the park for us. Others might enjoy it there.
First camping trip last July...Fell in love with Onaway :-) returned this year for Labor Day and cannot wait to return. Everyone was friendly, helpful and really made the weekend perfect. I would drive the 4 hours any time to visit my peace of heaven :-). First time campers I must say this is a great place to start, seasoned campers already know what a gem it is!
I live close and frequent the park. It is clean, staff is friendly, and the lake front lots are great for swimming. The lots are overall a bit close together, thus causing noise. The restrooms and showers are cleaned often and electric/water is easily accessible. There is also a store with gasoline/propane just outside the park.
very nice place, fishing, boating, campground is very clean.
All the Michigan State Parks are great!! Also fairly nearby is the Black Mountain Lodge where our family has had many happy holiday meals. It has a beautiful view in a wooded country location, buffets on holidays, and great staff.
