lumberman's monument park

truly great views of the AuSable River... Saw several Bald Eagles soaring above.. Not too far for a nice daytrip inland...

This is one of the most beautiful places in Norther Michigan. Any season of the year. We have gone here multiple times and different times of the year always beautiful.

I have been going to the Lumberman's Monument since I was a kid. My parents have photos of me in the sixty's climbing the towering sand cliffs known as the "high banks" by the locals. The Au Sable river surrounds the park with stairs that go down to the shore line.....easy going down but a good hike coming back up the stairs. There are plenty of hiking trails for the adventurous types, some of the most breath taking views I have ever seen. The rivers deep blue color, the green of the national forest for a back drop and the towering sand high banks are absolutely stunning and a must see., a gift shop during park hours will provide souvenirs, water and snacks.If your planing on seeing Michigan......This view is in the top 5 for me.

Lots of area history. A great attraction to teach children about the lumbering era. It's worth the drive.

We had planned a camping trip in the area since our last visit in June. We had planned on camping at the Rollways Campground, but....the campsites featured numerous massive ant hills, so we settled in at the Lumberman's Monument Camp site which is adjacent to the Lumberman's Monument Park. The camping area features asphalt paved parking areas for RV's, numerous restrooms, fire pits, barbeque grills, and large picnic tables. We pitched a tent, cooking our food over hot coals. The restrooms were clean, as were the camp sites. The camp sites are not secluded from other campers, although the sites are not on top of each other either. Considering we visited after the busy summer period, the campground was not crowded at all. It was a very pleasant experience. $15.00 per night.

I love exploring the monument and My kids 12, 8, & 9 participated in the summer program and really enjoyed themselves.

It is a nice stop but not great, we were expecting a lot more from all of the other reviews. In hindsight we would not have gone out of our way to go.

Very interesting. Before you look around, take time to watch the video. A bit long, but very informative. Beautiful views with over two hundred steps to the bottom.

Lots of well marked hiking trails and fun sand dunes to run down. Nice picture opportunities. During the summer they have educational programs which are great for the kids! Great place to visit. No admission fee required.

Beautiful views, family friendly, relaxing and a stress free get away in the heart of our great state! Free park unless you opt to purchase from the gift shop. Yes, 283 stairs down and 283 back up...worth the challenge. Pack a lunch, enjoy and relax.

I'm a local person who visits Lumberman's Monument during all of the seasons. Beautiful views, amazing sand dunes, and fun hiking trails are the reasons I return.

My family comes here at least once every summer. It's a local place we like to bring out-of-staters to show them just how beautiful Michigan can be. When you arrive, there is a gift shop and several informative displays about the logging industry. The view is fantastic. We always take the steps down to the water. The trip down is enchanting: shady groves, babbling brooks, flora and fauna. When you get to the bottom there is a nice view of the water and a boat display. Just be warned: the trip back up can be tiring, especially if you are out of shape. There are several spots to stop and rest, but it's not an easy climb. It's worth it, though.

The Monument it-self is only a part of this experience. If your up to it the step's going down to the river are quit a challenge(coming up) but well worth your time and breath! For the young at heart a little walk to the right will bring u to a big sand hill witch u can slid down on your can if u choose. The info on how the lumberman ate and lived is also interesting to read and to be glad u didn't have to live that tough life they had.
