We traveled to Conception Abbey during a day trip through rural northwest Missouri. We arrived to a still, quiet, and empty guest center and closed gift shop. We did find a display of colorful brochures that explained a self tour of the Basilica. As we began admiring the majestic Beuronese Murals and Baptismal in the Basilica, the monks began to file in for the 1:05pm Prayer time. We quietly left in a swift manner, as to not disrupt their meditation. I recommend viewing the Conception Abbey website before making your visit. We didn't know what to expect and had no clue as to the rich history and wonders of the Abbey.

This is a lovely Abbey and Basilica. We were here to visit seminarians from the Omaha Archdiocese, but you needn't be interested in that to find peace and tranquility here. The daily services are lovely, the new retreat center is very nice, and the setting is wonderful. Don't miss a side trip to see the convent at Clyde, two Miles away, with its beautiful chapel and incredible relic chapel. The latter has over 550 relics of the Apostles and Saints. Take the tour. Go for the day or stay overnight. The property is beautiful with a walk trail. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner...all good. This is a great place for a personal retreat or retreat with a group. There is a great bookstore/gift shop at the entry. You can join the monks for prayers or just spent time in solitude. There are three different places to stay. St Gabriel Guest House is more modern than the other two, but the others are nice if you don't mind the dated décor. A hour and half north of Kansas city, in NW Missouri finds you driving beautiful, tranquil, country roads leading to Conception Abbey located on beautiful parcel of land that stretches as far as ones eyes can see. I attended a 2 nights and 3 days spiritual retreat, that was truly a gift of spirituality and love which left me stronger in faith and sent me home with a sense of inner peace. The whole Abbey is simply beautiful and the Monks and Priest are available for teachings, and guidance in the Catholic faith. Lodging is available and must be book in advance by contacting the Abbey. that is the only word that describes this place. it is literally in the middle of no where NW mizzou...everytime i go i get super excited when i turn the corner and see the abbey in the distance. i know the peace, relaxation, & time with God is only a few short minutes away.

To what lengths would you go to disconnect? How far do you have to go -- Peru, Tahiti? Some remote national forest? Maybe not. Northern Missouri hosts one of the most tranquil places on earth, Conception Abbey and yes, you can stay there (not free -- check with the abbey for rates. There is also, as of 2012, a brand new guest center).The abbey is surrounded by rolling farmland and huge white windmills, which is not as startling as it sounds; they are surprisingly graceful. If you come up here for a day, you can stroll the grounds, walk the stations of the cross, take in a mass or two in the abbey -- yes, the brothers chant, and it is a lustrous experience -- and disconnect.If you stay a night or two, which I do every year, you get to do -- well, as close to nothing as possible. I haven't stayed in the new guest center yet so cannot comment, but there is no TV in Marian Hall. Cell phone and internet service is spotty or nonexistent. There are no stores (anymore), restaurants or really anything at all but fields within walking distance. Stanberry and Maryville aren't that far, if you must burn money and gas; there's also a quite lovely convent about a mile away. These, however, are all distractions.I recommend a stay here. This is a profoundly spiritual place even if you are not Catholic or even Christian. If you really want to disconnect, try a vow of silence for the weekend. That means no talking, texting, messaging, emailing. At all. To anyone. For any reason. It's much, much harder to do than you'd think and infinitely rewarding.

The drive here is worth it, if you want to see an amazing old abby that still has gregorian chants, and architecture looks right out of the 16th century. The interior of the abby is something to behold. And the nun is the glass casket really takes you back to that time. She holds such a place of honor
