We were told that this is the most beautiful of all state capitols by someone who had been to all 50. Since we haven't, we cannot attest to that. I have seen churches and castles in Spain and this rivals some of those. The use of stone such as marble and wood like mahogany and cherry in the House and Senate is a sight to behold. We saw gold leaf and carved bears on a chair in the Senate. Even some of the restrooms are intricate and full of detail. We attended a function in the rotunda. Getting a photo that portrays it accurately is nearly impossible. There are layers in each element that has more detail than a museum. The art all throughout is reason alone to visit. When built, it came in under budget so there was additional monies to commission art for specific spaces. We were given a tour by one of our legislators who is also quite proud of what Missouri has in this structure. Some museums do not offer this much so pleasing to the eye. Homage is paid to the industry and agriculture found in the state with history about specific cities. Missouri is the Show-Me state and the capitol is a perfect example of doing just that!
We visited the capitol in late February. We were lucky to receive a tour from Joe. He is a retired history teacher and his knowledge of Missouri history was amazing. The capitol is beautiful and includes frescos and paintings. Our tour was informative and interesting. Well worth a visit!
Open access to one of the best kept state buildings in the country. You get a chance to view beautiful paintings and some great outdoor artwork - such as the Lewis and Clark exhibit. Also offers some great photo opportunities.
State museum very interesting. During legislative session can observed legislature at work January thru May.
The grounds around the capital are beautiful, the fountains etc. Great for photos. The governors garden is close by and is full of flowers. Also the governors mansion is a block away.
There are some ongoing renovations going on, but it shouldn't spoil the experience. Very pretty in the spring.
The Missouri State Capitol is one of the most beautiful in the United States. The capitol is adorned with numerous paintings and also has an area honoring Missourians in the Hall of Fame. Most interesting is the ornate marble and woodwork throughout the many chambers. If in the Jefferson City area, this is one place not to miss. The capitol is extremely historic, truly depicting the people it serves.
Jefferson City, Missouri has such charm and history. The Missouri State Capitol Building is stately and impressive. Full of Thomas Hart Benton art and others. Wonderful state museum inside. The Missouri Supreme Court building across the street, a wonderfully charming down town just steps east of the Capitol building along with an beautiful Governor's Mansion. Look for the beautiful fountain of children in front of the Governor's Mansion and learn of its history. Later visit Central Dairy for the best hot fudge sundae (and other wonderful ice cream treats) anywhere hands down!
I have traveled all around the country and have toured many Capitols. In my opinion Missouri's Capitol is the best kept and prettiest in the USA.
Wonderful paintings and a capital more impressive than the US Capital in Washington await your visit to historic Jefferson City, Mo. Thomas Hart Benton fills the capital it is absolutely amazing. Step outside and what a view overlooking the Missouri River. The Capital is visible from every highway that enters Jefferson City and at Night the dome is spectacularly light up for all visitors to see. If you happen to see our Governor in the halls he will always stop and say hi just as if you were old friends.
I take my kids here about once every 5 or 6 years. The museum is constantly changing. Every time I go, I'm reminded how impressive the Capitol building really is. I drive by it every day so you tend to just see it in the background but exploring the grounds, fountains and museums on the main floor is a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Free tour of MO Capitol. Check to see if they are in session for. Gallery view. The tour doesn't take long so plan accordingly.
We took the tour and had an excellent guide who made it a fun experience for the children in our group. It is a beautiful capitol inside and out.
We went to Jeff City to tour the capital building and eat at Das Stein Haus. The experience was very relaxing and educational. The Park Service provides 4 tours a day and you may also view the exhibits and paintings on your own. We took 6 hours to enjoy the capital museum, a tour and walked the halls.
A Missourian, I've been in and out of the Capitol for years. I always find something new to see (and try not to get lost!). It is a magnificent, beautiful building. The first floor museum changes often. What is most impressive, though, is walking the halls and seeing the many murals. Be sure and see the Benton murals.
