OK, if you want a remote area that is quiet and you are not interested in swimming or activities for kids then this is the place for you.The park does have camp sites and cabins for rent but you have to make your own fun. The park is small but very quiet and for people seeking solitude this is a great place. For me one visit lasts me a lifetime.
For clarification, I am only rating the campground as it relates to RV and Trailer camping. No consideration is given for other aspects of a campground/park, such as swimming pools, clubhouses, or activities such as fishing or canoeing. Also, many campgrounds may have RV/TT sites that vary in quality. My assessment is base on what I perceive as the best they have to offer.I use a two part rating system. The first is based on the basic elements that most campgrounds provide. The value for each of the items is fixed. This puts all campground on the same level based on what they provide. The final rating is the basic number plus a factor of my assessment of campground maintenance, cleanliness and overall aesthetics. Occasionally, I will throw in a note to explain my evaluation. Most any campground can earn at least a basic 5.0 rating. For me an acceptable campground for a multiple night stay will have to have a final rating of 7.0 or above. Very few campgrounds will go over a 9.0 with 10 being the max. On Trip advisor a 6.5 to 7.0 is equivalent to 3 circles, four circles will be 7.5 to 8.0 and 5 circles are above will be 8.5 and above.Leroy Percy State Park CampgroundBasic evaluation: RV/Trailer Campsite review, (16) sites, Surface: Paved (good width with decent back-in ease), Electricity Hookup: all have 30 and 50 amp connection, Water Hookup: Yes, Sewer Hookup: No, Dump station: Yes, Grills/Fire Ring: Yes, Picnic Table: Yes, Comfort Station: Yes. Value = 6.75, Sites 1 and 14 have sewer connections. Some sites appear to be short so check before you reserve.Secondary rating. Based on the good maintenance of the sites, cleanliness of the comfort station, Laundry, and the overall value and appeal of park I added 1 points to the rating for an overall rating of 7.75This is a nice state park to overnight. If there are other activities that appeal to you then a multi-night stay would be comfortable.Visited one night, 30' TT January 2014
OK, this was a detour from our chosen path but we read about Leroy Percy state park with the 94 degree hot springs and the platform for viewing the enclosed alligators. We visited, and the place was very nice - great for farmilies - and we climbed the viewing platforms and nothing...........when we looked closer, there was rubbish in the enclosure and some of the fences were not secure so we figured that the alligators must have been moved and rehoused.
I lived here in the early Fifties when my Daddy was Superintendent. Going back for the first time in more than 60 years was bittersweet. The pool is gone, as is the log home where we lived. The artesian well that was in our back yard is now a weed-choked, fenced slough. The old lodge, once the thriving center of the Park, has been replaced by a nondescript, ugly shed of a building. Picnic grounds have become host to a Frisbee course (I think that's what you call it). Roads are unfortunately paved. But it's still quiet and peaceful out there, especially early in the morning, and you can still sit and look at the lake and remember when the whole Delta was a swamp pretty much like that. And that's reason enough to go, even now. One day soon, even what little wild is left of places like this, the trees, the water, the animals, will be gone. You need to go before that happens.
We stopped for the night at this state park and found it to be very nice. It's small and it seemed like there were several "fishing" people with their boats camping here. We were able to take a walk along the paved roads and we had water and electricity. What more do you need for an overnight with a trailer!?! If you don't fish, I'm not sure what you would do, but it's clean and easy to get to.
Leroy Percy State Park has been part of my life for many years. My teenage friends and I enjoyed events at the park in the 'fifties, my daughter and grandchildren loved the playground and the alligators, and now I get to visit each fall for my school reunion. The park offers a campground, rental cabins, fishing, the play area, educational nature studies, and a venue for meetings, dinners, and other social occasions. The warm spring and the lake are home to alligators that are interesting to watch and photograph. Indeed, there are many opportunities to observe wild life and capture the beauty and variety of the park in pictures. I never grow tired of visiting Leroy Percy State Park, which is much nearer to Hollandale, MS than Belzoni.PS: I have a dynamite photo of an alligator, but was unable to post it. Maybe a later time.
Driving south thru Mississippi, we stumbled upon this lovely small state park. We pulled in late, drove around for a few minutes looking for a good campsite to set up our tent. We had to laugh when we saw the "No Swimming" sign right next to the "Do Not Feed the Gators" sign. Upon waking the next morning, we took our regular early morning bike ride and did actually find an alligator in a fenced in swamp area. Didn't know gators were that far north. The small lake at the park was one of the most beautiful lakes I've seen in a while, with cyprus trees growing in the lake and along the edge. A sign at the office said something about "one of the most romantic state parks" in the US. It is a beautiful place. My only negative was the shower on the men's side had no hot water. The women's was OK though.
Love to go and see the gators at the park. You can also fish and paddle boat.
Leroy Percy State Park is located in the Mississippi Delta 5 miles west of Hollandale,Ms off MS 12. This is the oldest state park in the state. It is also the only state park in Mississippi with a wildlife preserve. Hunting and fishing are available. However, no swimming is allowed in the river because of the alligator population. For 2 nights in late November,2011, my husband & I, along with another couple rented a duplex at the park. Our price per couple was $80.00 per night. Also for rent are 1 & 2 bedroom cabins (1 bath, full kitchen) with a fireplace, as well as central heat & air. Also available is a 40 person group camp, primitive campgrounds, and a meeting room for daytime use. Breakfast & lunch can be purchased if desired. Disk golf & volleyball can be enjoyed as well as hiking trails and a few items of playground equipment. NOTE: This is really "Away From It All".....rustic,no phone service, no TV, no pool. Just enjoy family, friends, yourself, and the solitude!!!
