The building is impressive in its way but better still was the hustle and bustle of a place hard at its political work.We visited both chambers in session, but found the House easier to relate to, not least because of its far better working sound system. It being during spring break there were many kids there and several had been assigned semi official roles. Most moving was in he House when a visiting choir performed with gusto to entertain all there.

The whole dome is currently covered in scaffolding and you cannot currently walk or stand under the dome when you get inside. Despite all that, we still had a very nice free tour of the building conducted by a very knowledgable guide. If you like beaux art architecture and design, you'll love this place.

Had wanted to see the State Capitol while in Jackson, but when we did go down there, the area didn't appear to be particularly pedestrian friendly, nor did we see any places to park, so we didn't stop.It is in the midst of being renovated so there is scaffolding, etc.; perhaps when that is done it will be different.

The capitol (new) offers tours starting at 09:30. The tour guide was knowledgeable. The legislature was in session so we could not take pictures from the senate gallery but could from the house gallery? We even met the governor as he walked by our tour group. Very nice of him to take a minute and shake hands!

The Capitol is beautiful and full of History. It is under construction right now and will probably be until the end of 2015, but you can still tour and enjoy it. Excellent tour guides!

Surrounding area is in serious need of help, the area is not a place to walk at night, ok during the day but not so at night. Streets in need of repair and buildings in need or repair, they are trying to rebuild but it will still be years off.

My son, dad and I stopped by the state house on our way through Mississippi as we try to see all of the state houses when we travel through the states. I liked this statehouse because it is easy to get to from the interstate and has plenty of parking for visitors. While it was under some construction while we were there we could still walk up the steps and take plenty of pictures. It is a nice state house with very well-kept grounds and a lot of places to take good pictures. Well worth the visit!!!

While waiting for an appointment time we walked around a bit in the capitol building. Had we had the time we would have taken one of the free guided tours that last about half an hour.Lots of historic things to see in the building. We recommend it to folk from our state. In particular it would be good for children who are in about the 9th grade through the 12th grade. Younger kids likely would not grasp the historic significance of the building. Security is almost like at an airport. Be prepared to show your briefcase or purse to the guards, then you will go through a metal detector to get in.

We enjoyed the tour of the State Capitol. Our guide gave a very interesting history of the building of the Capitol, the materials used, and a description of how different areas of the building are used. Her love for history and for the building itself is infectious. Highly recommend the tour.

We have been to many state capitol buildings and were delighted with this one. It's facade is in the restoration stage, but the interiors is just spectacular. Had a wonderful tour guide who took us into all the legislative chambers and pointed out little known facts about the art and architecture. Great for history buffs and non-buffs alike. Try to stop if you're in Jackson. You won't be disappointed!

This is a great place to visit. Even got my picture taken "presiding" behind the podium in the house! Congenial, knowlegeable tour host. Don't go to the Old Statehouse, its closed! Made me late for the tour but the tour guide took me back over the places I missed. So nice.

A great place in Jackson. Free admission, friendly staff, interesting history, and beautiful architecture all in one! The staff told us that Anslem J. McLaurin, the 34th governor of Mississippi, his great-great grandson was Robin Williams! The rotunda is a must stop in the Capitol. You get to visit the Senate and House of Representatives, too. An awesome place while in Jackson.

Even though there was a lot of scaffolding around the building and some windows were boarded up, this is one of the most beautiful state capitol building we have ever seen. The stained glass windows, the different colors of marble, the acute attention to structural details and the agency of colors all contribute to an exceptional place to visit and the dome ceiling takes your breath away.

A lot of work was being done on the capitol when we visited and there was scaffolding all around the building. We elected to take the self-guided tour and ventured through the interior of the building on our own. It is a beautiful building on the inside. We have toured other state capitols and found this one to be really impressive.

As an Austinite, I thought the Mississippi State Capitol (which I toured inside) and the Governor's Mansion (which I missed the tour of) looked very much like our very nice buildings in Austin (unfortunately along with statues honoring the Confederacy). The capitol is definitely worth a look. Unfortunately, there's not much else to do in downtown Jackson, and it is sad that the city is such a state of disrepair. The old black section of town could have been renovated and turned into a blues and jazz venue, but at present, it is a wreck.
