new haven symphony orchestra

We recently attended the season opening performance of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony was the order of the evening. One of the most beautiful pieces of music simply executed to perfection. You become wrapped up in the highs and lows of this musical genius' work and the excellence of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra's attention to detail is a delight. We very highly suggest that you purchase your tickets to see and listen to this ensemble of professional musicians. It is an evening money and time well spent.

For a report I was writing on a performance on the Kavafian sister's performing Mozart I purchased front row seats. The show was very entertaining, there was never a dull moment (especially since this was my first symphony performance I had ever seen). I enjoyed the architecture and history behind the building. When I arrived I was shown the location of my seat and waited patiently for the show to start. Sometime during the middle of the performance I was tapped on my shoulder by a man around his mid 40's. He told me to "get out of his seat" and that he didn't care who I was, I needed to move. I was shocked and quietly moved to the seat next to him on the left across the aisle. There truly was not much of a difference. I was embarrassed and after the performance had ended I asked an usher where the seat on my ticket was located she responded that she was not sure. I did enjoy the show. However, this whole situation could have been avoided in the first place.

You just can't go wrong with the symphony. Wonderful, professional orchestra. Great music. Try to get to it at least one performance a season. You won't be sorry.

Oh, come on. They're terrific - what else. Don't believe they could be rated any less than excellent. Can't believe we're rating them but, then again, (duh) upon thinking about this...it gives them some much deserved accollades and attention. Go see them!!!! If you live in CT....support them.

A great orchestra but I don't like their programming: no effort to step into the 20th Century, never mind the 21st!

The New Haven Symphony is a venerable institution that has kept up with the times. It does a lot of outreach to new audiences (meaning they play a lot of stuff that purists might not love--but usually they do this in Shelton and Hamden). Their performance earlier this season of Beethoven's 3d Piano Concerto was as good as the BSO, which I heard earlier in the year. They were a little shakier with Tchaikovsy; but they are overall a first-rate band. It is a shame that they don't have a better auditorium; Woolsey Hall's sound is sluggish, depending upon your seat--and speaking of seats, you should bring a cushion; they're hard and uncomfortable. But the orchestra is something New Haven can be greatly proud of. Having recently received a magnanimous bequest, the NHSO now seems to be out of money trouble, and I have no doubt that they will do very good things--chiefly attracting young people to classical music.

Have always enjoyed their performances. The guest performers and conductors are just bonuses.

The first rate orchestra is full of gifted Yalies. Sometimes concerts are free.

They always sound good and put on a good show, especially at Woolsey Hall.
