What a great day. This museum has rotating shows and an exceptional permanent exhibit. Across the street is the Yale art gallery and great food nearby. Perfect!
This museum has the largest collection of British art outside the UK, and like in all the museums of Yale University - there's no entrance fee. I enjoyed the vast collection and couldn't help admiring the beautiful building of the museum as well: it was designed by American architect Louis Khan, and it's very impressive. When in New Haven - don't miss the Yale Center for British Art. It's a must for every art lover.
So classic works, a great facility in the middle of downtown New haven. It is not the Met or Lourve. A Half day trip takes you for the full tour. Yale art museum is across the street so a short walk gets you two for one.
This is definitely the best British art collection outside of England. Each floor is crammed with some of the finest works of British art by all the big name painters and artisans from every period. Rooms are big, spacious and airy. There are several spots to sit to ponder and admire the displays and exhibits. Right across the street from the famous Yale University Art Gallery. Parking is a nightmare as are the one way streets all around so use the parking garages. Take advantage of the parking and visit both galleries. There are great little cafes all over the area and a terrific bookstore. Walk across the street and go under the walk overpass with the large brass Roman Numeral clock on it. Once out from under look left at the famous SKULL and BONES fraternity house. A few steps further is the world famous Harkness Tower and the courtyard on the right has the patriot Nathan Hales statue and classroom. What a great and interesting area all within a couple of hundred feet of each other. Bring a camara.
Nice gallery to spend an afternoon ... Well layed out and convenient location central to Yale... Quiet rainy afternoon perfect place to hang out and chill
If you have some time, I highly suggest visiting the Yale Center for British Art. You will see some beautiful treasures that will have you memorized.
The good - - real art with only one room dedicated to modern art. Also, free admission. If you are an anglophile, you must make a note to visit in 2016 when it re-opens. Full disclosure: I am not an anglophile.
Turners, Constables, Colonial art and unique pieces from the last three centuries. There are even a handful of modern pieces.
Our second time here and we loved the Victorian Sculpture exhibit. Wonderful pieces that really showed the Victorian artistic talent. Great curatorial explanations for the pieces as well. I just wish there had been postcards or pictures of Victoria and Victorian-related art in the gift shop. I so very much wanted to send to friends cards with some of the pieces depicted especially those of Victoria herself. A missed opportunity here to make some money for the gift shop.
The Yale Center for British Art is a special place. I saw several interesting special exhibits and their collection of British Art is really impressive. The building itself is a treat to walk around in. It's definitely worth visiting if you are at Yale in New Haven.
The permanent collection here is excellent and they usually have interesting shows to see on rotation. We find this is always a pleasurable visit for a couple of hours on a nice afternoon - good pre-dinner or pre-lunch activity. Don't miss it!
The Yale Center for British Art is a gem and, by itself, worth a trip to New Haven. The permanent collection includes wonderful large Turners and small Constables and some paintings by Stubbs that are outstanding. The collection covers several centuries and provides a rewarding view of the development of British art. Temporary exhibitions are always interesting, beautifully curated, and crammed full of items that demand attention. The museum itself is a "museum piece;" there is a shop full of interesting items from Britain; and, in the basement, bathrooms that are always impeccable.
This is a lovely museum of a good size. For the interested visitor, I would say 3 hrs for a visit. It has one of the best collections of British Art outside the National Gallery in London. The Turners in particular are worth the trip. The museum is of course free, and the gift shop is kitschy, but cute. Keep in mind it is closed Mondays.
great art collection. I didint know many artists but worth the time. Nice paintings. Staff very gentle and helpfull
Both the special exhibits and the regular collection are wonderful. Curators have done a marvelous job with topcs from collage to slavery.
