My family has chosen Douthat State Park's large covered picnic pavilion for my son's after-rehersal picnic. Can hold all 103 family members. Kids can play, teens can pedal boat and hike, GenXers can FB from closeby and Seniors can relax. Grills included, easy clean up and the wedding couple can have some space. Inexpensive too. Hasnt happened yet but you do have to reserve early.

Wondering why I would write a review to share this place, except the staff deserves it. Immaculate cabins, always. Unparalleled hiking trails. Clear flowing streams and waterfalls. No Internet or phone. Even the drive here is pleasant.

One of the most gorgeous parks in Virginia, certainly a "best-kept-secret" kind of place, as it enjoys moderate crowds year-round, with miles and miles and acres and acres of hiking opportunities. We always enjoy our time out at Douthat, and would love to see more folks take advantage of it (and the local businesses in Clifton Forge!).

There are great hiking trails with amazing views, a pretty lake with plenty of activities. The facilities were clean and best of all since there are electric hookups there are no generators!Staff was very helpful and friendly!

I spent a cloudy, drizzly Columbus Day long weekend with 9 friends here, my first visit to a VA state park. We had one of the two largest lodges, a long cabin sleeping 12-16, with two bathrooms, a kitchen and best of all, heat! It was wonderful to be away from TV, internet, wi-fi and even cellphone contact, but there is a dial-up telephone in case of emergency. We brought board games but there were some there, as well as playing cards. The kitchen was complete, but the dishwasher wasn't working, so we had some quality time getting to know each other better over KP. On Saturday there was an Apple Festival near the lake, not affected by the showers. On Sunday we were close enough to drive to Clifton Forge and visit the fantastic Appalachian Arts & Crafts center, which was sophisticated crafts and beautiful art. There's a small antique mall, too.Hiking and boaring weren't inviting due to the rain, so we've decided we'll return another time when the weather may be better. It's a great place to go!

Built by CCC. It's a great place to unplug (no cell phone reception or wifi in park). Network of trails in good conditions, blazes and trail posts for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riding. Cabins are pet friendly with fully equipped kitchen, sofa, dinning table and chairs, plus the porch, picnic area, fire ring, and logs.

we only hiked one trail-blue suck falls trail and it was very nice. I would recommend this park-there was so much to do.

We stayed in Douthat State Park in one of their more modern 2 bedroom (Q + twin & 1 twin bunk) cabins for a fall getaway with the kids to explore Warm Springs, Va and nearby hiking areas in Hidden Valley and Douthat. What a great find! Our cabin in the woods was finished inside, much less rustic than I was expecting. It came with central air & heat, a full kitchen (no dishwasher), linens, a wood burning fireplace, and a screen porch with rocking chairs. Outside there is a picnic table and fire/bbq ring. The park has a waterfall hike, a small lake with a beach and boat rentals, trout fishing, bike trails, campgrounds, playgrounds, even a lakeside restaurant. The staff couldn't have been nicer and there's even some nature center type displays at the check-in office. It's about 40 minutes on gorgeous mountain roads to the warm spring Jefferson Pools. They even called and mailed back some stuffed animals we forgot under the covers. We will be back for sure.

One of the best state parks in Virginia. Whispering Pines campground is very nice and spacious. We love how the park system does not stack campers on top of each other. Lots of trails and some neat sights to see within an hour of the park. Can't wait to go back. If you travel to this park from the Tidewater area I would suggest using highway 460. Traffic on I64 and 81 tend to be bad and adds two hours to the trip.

Douthat State Park is one of the parks built during the CCC era, the Civil Conservation Corps. If you are not familiar with it look it up as it is interesting. There is a beautiful small lake here, swimming and boating, tennis, cabins, a small creek and lots of camping. The campground we stayed at, Whispering Pines, was a take over, buyout, of a local campground that was failing. The state has upgraded it and now it is a nice place to go. It is only 2.4 miles off of Highway 64 making it a convenient overnight stopover but I would plan at least two days here.

We camped at the Whispering Pines section and put our kids and grandchildren in one of the older cabins. Fun was had by all. Staff was really friendly. Beautiful hikes.

It was a slow time to go to the Park. It was so beautiful and clean. It was nice to use our own kayaks and ride our bikes. They provided wood $4.00 for 10 pieces, that was really really nice.

Large camping area, nice swimming area, the restaurant food not so good. Have to be careful at night when driving, there are a lot of deer in the woods.
