We enjoyed a great walk with the kids today, and saw dozens of eagles. What a great find! They have a nice room in the visitor center for the kids. We can't wait to go back when it's a little warmer outside!
This park was wonderful. A friend and I went kayaking in the early morning on a Saturday. The water was like glass, and the shoreline teemed with egrets and eagles. This is a great park to hike through, have a picnic, or rent a canoe or kayak. I would highly recommend this for any nature enthusiast.
Mason Neck has wonderful scenic water views to picnic by. There are several trails and even a paved bike trail that connects to Gunston Hall and Pohick Bay Park. The Nature Center is great!
Be sure to go into the Nature Center and talk to Camp Rangers, very helpful and knowledgeable about the entire area on the Potomac. Best kept secret in Northern Virginia!!
Mason Neck is a beautiful park to visit for a picnic or for a hike. There are scenic views of the water and great spots for watching the sunset. The facilities there are clean and well kept. There are trails that are well maintained if you want to bike or need wheelchair access. There are also trails that are not ADA accessible, but you can still access beautiful views without them. Direct water access for dogs that like to swim.
Love to watch Eagles here! Lots of action, Bird watching too, on trails to walk throughout the huge Mason Neck Park. Biking the Park to is also recommended at it is pretty big. Paved trails mostly..... Snack shack, picnic tables and lots of great views to look at over the water and boats goin' by Occoquan Bay next to the Potomac River.
My husband and I go walking most Sunday afternoons, It is so peaceful and you always mange to see some wildlfe
This would be a gazillion dollar piece of land if a developer got hold of it. Instead, it's a state park with access for everyone to Belmont Bay on the Potomac and picnic grounds. Just beautiful
This is a lovely, verdant area with a helpful visitor's center and kyaks and canoes to rent for exploring the bay. Be sure to check the tide schedule when planning your visit if you intend to go boating.
Ok, I have my own idea in my head about what makes a great park. I didn't know in advance that Mason Neck was going to be it. Nearby this state park is also a county park, a national park, a water park, a river, and still close-by, Mount Vernon, the home of the first President, George Washington. The result is a lot of land that is not developed and a place of quiet solitude where you can see birds - we saw a couple bald eagles - and could hear them too. It was all a calming experience. The park has portions on the water, with shaded picnic tables nearby, bikes and maybe small canoes or boats for rent, and plenty of families with kids. Bathrooms clean. Grass at the time, where it was, was green and not too many muddy spots I didn't experience many bugs either. There are some trails to walk on... I wouldn't recommend a stroller on the path i took. Part of the walk is a raised boardwalk near the extremely thin shoreline. State park rangers were out and about & approachable. Elsewhere was a state park building that wasn't falling apart that had the occasionsional talk about happenings at the park. I had a really great time at the park for the short time I was there. So good that I am hesitant to go back and shatter the possible myth I created for myself. Go see for yourself.
There is a great Eagle reserve just to the south of the boat ramp and easily accessible by kayak/canoe.
Beautiful setting very close to crowded suburban areas-underutilized.
We love to come here to kayak in the Occuqoun and its creeks. It is very isolated and full of birds, including numerous eagles. The fishing is generally very good.....the park is well-maintained.
