An interesting little visitor center. Not that helpful but nice to visit. Closes promptly at 5pm, but tells you how to visit places quickly.

we had stopped in here after learning on a previous trip that visitors center were a wealth of knowledge. We had so much help from the 2 women that worked there and they were able to provide us with directions and suggestions.

The guides help you find brochures for almost anything you want to do in the area. A biggie for us is the Civil War history, and there is a whole room with film, brochures, maps, etc. Another room has a diarama of Stonewall Jackson's Great Train Raid. Even though we go to Harrisonburg at least once a year, we go to the visitor center every time. It's also right across the street from the public library, if you need to use a computer.

If you plan a visit to the Shenandoah Valley/Harrisonburg I highly recommend a visit to the visitor center for maps, brochures and coupons local information on events etc. Free parking for downtown area, and restrooms all in one place. It was extremely helpful to my visit to the area!

The visitor center is in the second oldest home in Harrisonburg. Its a beautiful place to see and they provided great maps and ideas for things to do and restaurants to visit.

My husband and I were in the area for a fall getaway weekend. We stopped by the visitor center to see what we could do and where we could stay. Carole was extremely friendly and helpful. The center was very nice, clean and organized. So glad we stopped there first!

The tourism center is located in a historic building that interesting in itself. Our host, Jane, did a great job of educating us about activities in our areas of interest. You will find the typical brochures, plus a nice Civil War film (15 minutes), gift shop and small display about the Shenandoah area during CW times. Downtown Harrisonburg is easily walkable -- a little hilly (this is a mountainous area after all), but we found it very manageable. Note that several attractions are not open on Mondays (such as the Quilt Museum) so plan accordingly.

We are visiting Harrisonburg and Staunton for a couple of days from our home in Oregon. We thought what better way to learn the surroundings then the Tourism and Visitor Center. So we arrived late morning and enjoyed the movie about the civil war battles that took place in this area. In the movie room there is quite a bit of signage about the battles in this area of the Shenandoah and some pamphlets for visitors for further information and orientation. Then we went to the Valley Turnpike Museum which is in the same building. This was very interesting because the transition of roads from horse and buggy day to more modern day is not something you think about so the exhibits and information was very interesting. The nice young lady at the front desk gave us a walking map and recommended a nice lunch at Clementines which we did and it was scrumptious! The gift shop is also very nice with lots to choose from. Afterwards we did a walk around historic Harrisonburg and drove out to see the General Turner Ashby Monument. I highly recommend a stop at the Tourism and Visitor Center as a way to get oriented to the battlefields in the area and the old historic town of Harrisonburg.

At the visitor center, the video explaining troop movement was the best part. A few exhibits inside are good. If you are coming for some civil war landscape, you need to go somewhere else. The lady at the visitor's center was very friendly. We walked down the street to the Quilt Museum to discover a $7 fee. Any husband accompanying his wife should be admitted for free. We skipped the museum which did not seem to have visitors. We received information from the visitor's center about a local about 10 miles south east down in Cross Keys only to discover that the sites are on private property which doesn't leave much to look at.Would not recommend unless you happen to be in the area.

This is the correct place to start your visit to Harrisonburg. Lots of parking behind the Center. We very much enjoyed the video of some of the Civil War Battles that took place in the area. There were racks of information about the entire area. The ladies that were working the desk were very well informed and quick with answers and advice.

The sweetest lady helped us with information on hiking on Skyline Drive. She had maps and showed us how we were in a Valley on the map.
