I travel from Virginia to West Virginia to visit my mother and always have to travel back on 250Sjust so I can stop in Mcdowell's Sugar Tree Country Store. It's like walking back in time, a much more laid back time right down to the beautiful music that is always playing to the pot bellied stove throwing out a glow of heat in the colder months. So many things to look at as far as local crafts and my most favorite thing to buy is the maple nut fudge made right there in the store. Melts in your mouth. Maple syrups and jellies are plentiful and you are always met with cheerful conversation by the absolute kindest of proprietors.

I have experienced several dozens of Maple syrups from many regions including Vermont, New Hampshire, and Canada. This is among the top 3 I've ever tasted! Friendly and highly knowledgeable staff, free samples when you walk in - generally 4 different grades of syrup are available. The candied pecans/walnuts are divine. Best maple fudge hands down. I noticed a huge variety of jams but had already picked up way too many maple products... maybe next time.

If you're in McDowell, go to the Sugar Tree store for maple candy, maple-covered nuts, buckwheat flour, maple syrup and handmade placemats and other goodies.
