I didn't know what to expect on my visit here but was blown away by the Breakthrough Battlefield tour and the Museum of the Civil War Soldier. The day of my visit was cold and rainy and although I was one of very few visitors, the staff was most accommodative and friendly. The museum is very informative, even for people who are knowledgeable about the Civil War. I was the only person on my guided tour of the battlefield and Edward, the guide, made me feel very welcome. He was very knowledgeable and seeing the era trenches and hearing his great description was a special treat.

This refurbished home and grounds contain an excellent museum depicting the life of the average soldier - the weapons, the clothing, the food they ate. There are many authentic items and they also have very creative "Living History" interactive learning stations for children, anti-bellum homes and walking trails across the battlefield.

The museum was very interesting, especially being able to follow your solidar thru the battle and see if he lives or dies. The grounds are kept up to 1800's battlefield scenes. You can see yourself walking with the other solidars into battle. Nice afternoon stroll or a whole day of education and entertainment.

I wasn't sure what to expect here, thinking this might be more for children than the adults, but ended up really liking it, and to think I almost skipped it! It has interesting information that you really do not get at the nearby National Parks and Battlefields. It is very engaging and informative. It turned out to be one of the high lights of our trip. We came near the end of the day, but they were willing to allow us to return the following day, if we were not able to see everything by closing time.

Great visit! If you get a chance, this is a wonderful escorted Civil War era plantation that allows us to get a snapshot of history. The museum is well maintained the narrated films educational. Nice bookstore for reference materials.

The museum was nice but my favorite parts were the Tudor Hall Plantation and the military encampment. The walk is easy on well maintained paths but I would suggest going on a cool day.

My husband who is a Retired Army Vet really wanted to visit and catch up on history. So, The family and I went to visit, and it was a really interesting and informative place to visit.I found it very useful to catch up on my history, as I am new to the country, and so much of history to indulge in.Whilst watching some of the battle enactments and looking at some of the artifacts, I felt like I was lost in time. Very moving and emotional!I thoroughly enjoyed the enactment by one the historians who was very knowledgeable on the subject. Our one regret is that we did not allow enough time for our visit. My suggestion to future visitors, start early, and it will be worth all your while. Also, allow yourselves time to sit and enjoy this beautiful land before continuing to the various sections of the park. Our next visit will definitely be during a cooler period and to start early, and maybe spend half a day easy :)

Allow a few hours to explore. The museum has headphones that tell about things as you go by. I wouldn't recommend this part for small kids, but the outside farm house and earthen works should entertain the whole family. Don't miss this unadvertised gem!

We visited the Pamplin historical park after we visited The Crater battlefield, wish we would have visited the historical park first. I admit I was surprised. It was an awesome experience!!!! We really enjoyed ourselves. They should publicize the historical park more, it is an unknown gem.

This park is very interesting for older children, but not so much for younger ones. My 12 year old grandson was entertained throughout our visit. Five and seven year old grandchildren enjoyed parts of the park, but became antsy during the museum portion of the visit. They all enjoyed the very entertaining (and educational) presentation by the docent at the soldier encampment. Probably the most enjoyable hour ever spent at an attraction of this type! Lots of walking, not much shade, and few places to sit - be prepared and you'll enjoy this park.

Our Civil War Tour for our 15y/o grandson included Pamplin Historical Park, which was the top historical site of our whole trip. Museum was fantastic as well as the working plantation. We could gave spent the entire day, so if in or near Petersburg, don't miss it! Ann from Georgia

It was a wonderful experience to visit this park and to check out the many displays and to read about so much of the history of the civil war. Petersburg was a preview of trench warfare in WW I

We have been there twice and have enjoyed both visits. Very interesting and well worth the stop! Very nice grounds.

We happened upon this place and the other reviews are correct, that it is a well done indoor/outdoor museum/historical spot. We only spent 2 hrs there but could have spent 4 hrs if our 6 year olds could have tolerated it, although the well cared for grounds allowed them plenty to run and see.
