The tasting room is literally right on a pond. Nice facilities, and some of the nicest wine people we've ran across. Wine slushees are awesome. According to the owner, this is one of the oldest wineries in VA. Wines were pretty good. They do have lots of picnic space, and encourage you to bring your own.
We visit Virginia wineries often, but had missed this one. We almost spurned it due to the July review claiming Unicorn has only sweet wines. We like creamy Chardonnays, and they do not produce that (few VA wineries do - Gray Ghost is one exception), and we like earthy reds. We really enjoyed Unicorn's Meritage and, surprisingly, the Slightly Embarrassed light red. They were not tasting the Merlot, but we bought a bottle to try later (haven't yet). We found the tasting room clean and fresh and cozy. Several folks came in for the "slushies," obviously popular on warm days. We will definitely return. I gave them four rather than five stars just because their selection is limited - but, hey, it's a small producer and therein lies some charm and creativity.
Very personalized, informative wine tasting. Small and homey. Wines are amazing. Love the Traminette and the Slightly Embarrassed. We had a great time here and will definitely be back!
We pulled up and instantly noticed how beautiful the grounds and the pond are. Nicely kept landscaping made the place look beautiful! We went inside and looked at the tasting menu, it looked rather basic. There was no chardonnay, which is fine, as long as they offered other dry wines. They really only offered one.The wines aren't too bad and the staff is friendly and accommodating.
We are happy to note a 180 degree change from when we visited the Unicorn Winery almost 10 years ago. The wine we tasted this past week was fresh and delicate, tasty but not heavy ... And we did the full tasting from the Chards to the Cab Franc. I would buy any of these to bring to a party, and in fact did buy one of each, and 2 of the Traminette after tasting the wine slushy made from it. The outside area has always been lovely with a deck and a pond, but it is far better manicured, now. The inside décor has been upgraded tremendously. Gone are the dirty vinyl floors, low drop ceilings and plastic chairs. Like the wine, everything is clean and fresh feeling, beautifully maintained and finished with pride. Our tasting was $7/person for 6 wines plus the frozen desert. This is a great, relaxing destination to add to a day in the country.
We went to Unicorn Winery the last weekend of March in 2013 for my husband's birthday and were so surprised! This was our first visit to this winery and we chose it because we had a complimentary tasting card from a wine festival we had been to. They have a nice outdoor seating area with a pond that has fish, frogs and turtles. Their friendly Schnauzer greets you at the door. The woman who did our tasting was friendly, knowledgeable and great to chat with about the wines. We tasted a few whites and reds. I liked the table rock white, the slightly embarrassed and the Crimson Sunset which is a light red (I typically like the whites). They also have a frozen wine, frappe vino which was awesome! We ended up buying the three above to take home and a crimson sunset to enjoy on the deck and the box to make our own frappe vino. While it doesn't turn out quite as good as at the winery it's fun to make and you can always change up the type of wine you use.Whenever we have guests from out of town we take them here and this has easily become our favorite winery in the area.
Outside property is a nice area with man made pond and fountain gushing out water in the middle. Has seating right on a deck a few feet away from the water and looks to provide a relaxing place to buy a bottle and stay for a while. Walking in I was hit by the stale and not so good smell that felt that they needed to air the place out. It was such a beautiful day they needed to have the doors open. Out of the five wines they offered I enjoyed two of them. The pours seemed real small for the $5 tasting fee.
I went out here with some friends and honestly, they were very nice and knowledgeable but they have very few wines. The pours are relatively reasonable but there just wasn't enough of them. We all bought something (I got the Rose) and am happy with it. Would I go there again, probably not.
This winery has fewer wines available than most. But the grounds need to be experienced. The deck and pond will take your breath away. I could stay there for hours drinking wine and watching the turtles swim by.
Decent winery in the heart of northern Virginia wine country. Unicorn Winery (the tasting room) is a bit smaller than most of the wineries in the area (about half the size of Barrel Oak or Delaplane; slightly smaller than LaGrange and Rappahannock; comparable to Naked Mountain). The wine tasting is a bargain ($5.43 incl tax) and they let you sample some wine slushies (a bit sweet for my taste, but some welcome relief from the July heat). You can buy the slushy mix in the store and take some with you.The porch area overlooks the lake. The property is beautiful and well-kept, but not as impressive as some of the other wineries close by.The staff is knowledgeable and friendly.Recommended wine: Slightly Embarassed (rose)
We arrived at our inn during the week and discovered almost all of the wineries were closed. Our innkeeper found the Unicorn Winery and we were uexpectedly delighted. The owners are retired military and gracious and friendly. She did a wonderful job of introducing the wines and taking the time to answer all of my husbands questions on cultivating grapes. We were surprised to try the frappevino. We both loved the frozen wine drink, which goes with either white or red wine, buying a box to serve with red wine for friends at home. The setting at the winery is peaceful and idyllic with a small pond with water fountain and seating nearby. We enjoyed the Table Rock White and the Chambourcin, since we tend to like the sweet wines.
Not being a big wine drinker, I should not judge wines, but I can say there was nothing here which I would rave about. The store itself is very small and the employees are not terribly inviting, but if you are out in the area I would suggest you stop in for yourself and see if you like what you find.
The owner was so nice and told us all about each wine as we tasted. Then she went out of her way to help us pick a place for dinner. The vinyard was cute, as was the store. I highly recommend.
The wine didn't knock my socks off but there were some interesting offerings- Traminette with hints of basil and the Slightly Embarrassed (a rose' with a blushing unicorn- would probably make a wonderful apology gift). They also pushed a slushy mix (mix in your wine of choice and freeze). The tasting room opens onto the gift shop, which felt a little like a lobby, but the grounds outside were pleasant and included several seating areas and a pond with turtles and a fountain. Pack a picnic lunch and order a glass of the slushy to make your trip complete. Tastings were $5 and the smallish glasses are available for an additional $3 or 2 for $5 (they have unicorns on them!). The only food offerings we were aware of were the house-made cheese ball nibblers- with garlic, onion, and pecan, they were definitely an unexpected pairing for the sweetish Chambourcin grapes in their Crimson Sunset.
Richard and Sandy LePage were awesome hosts for our 1 day trip to the winery. They are long time friends and we new it was going to be great. My favorites are the blush and they have this unique red that is served cold that I just loved. They have a slush mix for wine that they sell...it's the bomb! I think they do a great job on the red wine. Make sure to go just up the road to see the covered bridge and then don't miss the canyons.
