This museum is rare in that most of the exhibits are functional, airworthy planes. I had never heard of this attraction, even though I've called Virginia Beach "home" since about 1997. Its setting is amongst the fields and farms of Pungo, which in itself is a very enjoyable area to visit. The volunteer guides were knowledgeable and entertaining, and managed to include stories (some personal) that brought the exhibits into ever greater relevance. I'm really looking forward to the air show later this year, and getting to see the planes in the air. I strongly recommend this museum to anybody with an interest in military aviation history. After our tour today, we drove over to Margie and Ray's (towards Sandbridge - about a 10-minute drive) for some of the best she-crab soup in the area. A very nice cap to a wonderful day.
This fabulous Museum was the highlight of our trip to Virginia Beach. The absolutely exceptional docents give you as much or as little info as you want.I loved the flying jackets the docents were wearing. What I didn't realise until later during our tour is that they aren't Museum provided uniform....they are the actually flying jackets these brave aviators wore during their flying days.If we are ever back in Virginia Beach, we'll come back to the Museum for another visit. Fabulous!!
Been to this museum a few times and everything there flys. Great collection of warbirds and a well educated and friend crew. I recommend checking their website to see what scheduled to fly and special events. But don't miss there "Warbirds Over the Beach" event held every year, it's a site to see.
Wow my husband was so excited to have seen all the historical planes in this WWII hangers with the original water tank and hangers the air show
We found this place using the GPS so we weren't ready to be greeted by dinosaurs at the entrance. As soon as you turn off the main road stop and pull over before going through the gate so you can walk around the dinosaur displays. Then proceed down the long drive to the actual museum. As an aviation museum I would say it is overpriced but taking in to consideration the dino-display I think it is worth the visit. This is probably better when they are having an airshow or other special activity but go either way and see the planes and the big lizards in the front yard.
There are many aircraft from the war eras of both the US and foreign countries. If you are an airplane buff you will enjoy.
the number of planes that the owner flies and the condition of the displays, There are planes from WW1 and WW2 that excite the young and the old alike.
Virginia Beach is a military town and everyone is very proud of our soldiers past and present. If you live in Virginia Beach the jets are the sound of freedom.
On my many adventures to Virginia Beach I have passed the sign for this attraction. I finally decided to check it out. 14 miles off the interstate but 5 hangars of planes and aviation memorabilia.
"Off season" time was perfect to go....my hubby & I were the ONLY ones there for hours and had at least 5 different gentlemen who volunteer help us w/ tours...they'd just come up and ask if we had any ?'s and were SOO informative! The WW 2 re-constructed REAL German Hanger is fascinating...& it's all from 1 very generous local man who has collected all these historic planes (almost ALL fly!) and cool red jaguars and other cool items....DOO go it's well worth the $ and is clean, and has a well-stocked gift shop...we enjoyed the laid-back vibe of this wonderful museum and a keen appreciation for the amazing pilots & mechanics who FLEW these marvels at altitudes that would make your head spin!
We've been to Virginia Beach for years but had never visited this gem. Dozens of WWI and WWII planes and their stories. Free tours by a docent really provide depth to the experience. Interesting and unique extras include a tube motorcycle (for air drops), and other vehicles, engine mock-ups that explain the progression of air power. Will definitely add this to our list of what to see when we bring friends with us to the beach.
Great attraction in VB for the historical aviation buff. Spans the ages, and the WW2 stuff is the best. If you love old planes and military history, this is the place to see some cool stuff without the crowds
Excellent tour. Amazing vintage planes from Germany, England, China, and Russia. Even have an original V1 pulse jet bomber. Tour guide very knowledgeable.
Try it, you'll like it, especially if you are a fan of WWI and WWII airplanes. Wonderful place to visit and to take visiting friends.
If you are curious about a little WWI and WWII history regarding planes, etc from the Allied side as well the German; this place is sure to amaze you with its vast collection! All planes are from a private collection, some can still be flown. There is even a hanger brought from Germany (WWII) and reassembled here in Virginia Beach. Who would have thought?!. Each year around May they have an air show where these historical planes are taken out. We really enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend!
