Came after going to the Sweetwater RR. The place does not disappoint. Had building from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The price of admission includes audio wands which had quite a bit of information. Was well worth the stop and the price of admission.
A must see if you're within 100 miles. Awesome collection of artifacts! Scenery and History as well. Just a great experience.
We visited on a weekday in February and were the only visitors. It was quaint and nice to go through the various buildings. I enjoyed seeing the various artifacts but felt that they needed a bit more organization. When you walked in a building, they crammed everything they could into a room instead of setting up the room the way it might have looked for the time frame of the building. I did get some nice pictures and the walk was an easy walk. It was worth the price of admission and would be great for school aged children to visit.
Visited the Buffalo Gap exhibit with my daughter and her roommate (a history major). The variety of the accumulated building and available audio tour really brought the past to life. We especially enjoyed the friendly, talkative docents who were dressed in period appropriate clothing. It is close to Abilene and worth a visit. My daughter's roommate actually works there part-time now.
Lovely historical village with perserved buildings from different stages of Texan history - starting with the late 1800s to the 1920s i believe - they also boast a nice gift shop and bookstore - staff are excellent and pets allowed on leashes. Worth a stop!
I recommend looking up their website to know what is open for the month you're visiting this area. The website tells you about different preserved historic buildings in the town to view and any celebrations scheduled. We visited during a hot summer month for a chili cook off and then later on to the Perini Ranch for lunch to cool off again. We also stopped at a café in the center where pottery and wood work shops were located, and the woman who owned the café told us about the sense of community residents shared. Lots of old oak trees give the town a different feelings from the usual open ranges of TX. Reminded me of a scene in Open Range. Truly felt like a step back to cowboy days.
If you like old historical places, this one really put you in that place and time. TAKE YOU TIME and enjoy the all there is to see there.Rushing thru it not what its make for, need to check ot all the the building and listen to each thing about it one. Makes it worth the trip.
My grandson and daughter and myself really enjoyed this place. This is a little smaller than some museums like this that have gone to however, this is great size for children to start out with lots of history to explore. The cost is reasonable and get your coupon. This should be added to your plans if you are in Abilene.
We had a very good visit listening and watching the interpretive videos (bring you smart phone with a code scanner to watch video) bring a sack lunch or snacks as this can take a while to see it all.
Don't go in mid day of August. You will melt. At least we were provided with water. The presentations by earpiece were a little hard to hear but it was sufficient for what I wanted to see.
Don't let the laid back, seemingly sleepy nature of Buffalo Gap lull you into thinking there is little to see here. Leave the buggy beneath a shade tree and stroll the knot of historic old buildings. You will adapt to the proper "fixin' to" pace soon enough as you return to those not always so thrilling days of yesteryear.
This is a very nice place to see a little bit of history. There are several buildings to walk through and learn about old times in Texas. Being in the town of Buffalo Gap, it's sort of a hidden gem. Worth a look!
We came in the middle of the week and were a little worried at first, as there didn't seem to be many visitors and it looked kind of deserted. The village is in the middle of a little town called Buffalo Gap, population 436 people, so it's really small. But we were actually pleasantly surprised, the historic village is really interesting with old buildings and relics. We recommend getting audio headphones so you get information about all the items at this museum.
This is a walking tour with a hand held recorder to listen to descriptions of each of the 18 exhibits and buildings. It is a walk through time in the Abilene area from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. The village is populated with 18 buildings filled with historically pertinent items. It is a fascinating walk through time on the Texas frontier. The village also is the residence of two delightfully friendly cats who walk with you and "talk" to you if you pay attention and talk back to them. It was a thoroughly delightful experience.
We enjoyed our visit. Buffalo Gap is a small community, quiet and quaint. The historical Village is full of buildings and memorable relics of a past time. It speaks of the beginnings in this area and was a wonderful visit. We recommend it to all.
