copper breaks state park

Thought I'd check out this park while in Quanah for business. The park ranger allowed me to drive through and provided a map with information about the park. It was a beautiful park with very well kept camping, picnic and activity areas. I look forward to coming for a weekend when I can stay and enjoy the trails and do some fishing.

We really like the isolation of this park. It is usually not crowded. It has some great fishing spots, we caught our limit. Hiking was fun but bring water! You will not believe the west Texas sky at night. Come for the Star walk. It is a guided tour of the night sky with telescopes set up.

This is a very nice park that is far away from the city lights so the stars are plentiful on clear nights. We arrived on a Thursday and there were only 3 other RVs who left on Friday, so we had the park to ourselves. Later on Friday about 15 RV arrived so we weren't alone. There are many hiking trails. There also is a smaller "upper" lake by the group camping that we only discovered on our way out that looked like it would be good for swiming. The main lake is very low on water, the boat ramp was unusable. Once the drought breaks this park will be better. On and while hiking we came upon a baby Horned Toad , have not seen one in a long time.

This is a great little park hid away in the valley about 12 miles south of Quanah. Camping sites provide restrooms. There a two lakes for fishing along with biking and hiking trails. If you want to do cross country running, trails can be used for this. The headquarters has a nice little museum for viewing the history of the area.

The last time we were out at the park, we took our nieces and nephew with us. They had a great time feeding the longhorns and playing around the water. We've been hiking with our preacher and his wife, camped with a group of our kid's friends, it's a nice little park, great staff. Beautiful view of the night sky. Recently voted one of two state parks with the best night view. They have Star Walks during the summer. It's kind of off the beaten path, but worth the detour. Too bad the state took away funding for parks years ago. When I was a kid, this was always the place to go on weekends, with paddle boat rentals, a swim beach (still have that) with a floating dock. Still a great, quiet park, though.

My family and I camped for two nights. The park's strengths: very enjoyable and well marked hiking trails, family atmosphere, friendly registration, longhorns on site, the Kiowa (non-electric) sites were very shaded, the lake was lovily and peaceful. Flushing toliets throughout the park, so hiking is more enjoyable. Comanche sites were level and accomodated large tents (possibly several at each site). One family gathering had six tents set up between two sites and many of those were large. The picnic tables are covered with tepee-like shade cover which also served as a wind break. They sell firewood and ice on site. We did not have any trouble with wildlife. The park's weaknesses: little privacy at camp sites, restrooms seemed in need of cleaning when we arrived on Friday morning and just got worse all weekend. The restrooms were never nasty, but we did run out of toliet paper Saturday afternoon. There was no camp host, which probably explains the bathroom problem. Because of the drought, the lake was extremely low, so no swimming and fishing was more difficult to access. When full the lake would be a definite strength. Only a few of the sites at Comanche had shade.Recommendations: If you are tent camping, try the group site at the end of the park. If it is not reserved, individuals can use. These sites were beautiful, small,seldom used, water was available, but no electric. Hike the trails near the lake, you have to climb a bit on two of them, but very fun. Great trails for mountain bike too. Summary: It is not the best (that would be Caprock Canyon S.P), but it is far from the worst. It was enjoyable but average.

Park employees were super friendly and helpful. As one other reviewer mentioned drought has lessened the appeal of the park so we had the park to ourselves. Car camped (in a tent) for two nights and hiked a total of 15 miles. The park includes rocky ledges, grasslands and almost desert like areas - interesting hiking. While you are there make sure you go see the "kissing" longhorns.

Not a lot to do in terms of organized activities, but they have a nice buffalo herd. Interesting programs in summer.

Driving to Copper Breaks SP from Dallas, I spent several hours on the road, knowing I'm taking a risk but hoping for the best. Seeing any animals could have provided that. Unfortunately, nothing of that sort happened. The only trace for animals were the many dead turtle armors, that were to be found at large numbers close to the ponds. Other then that, there was very little to see and little to enjoy.May be on a different season, or at a different time....But even here and on the way, I managed to take some nice photos, to compensate a little.

One word DROUGHT.The park itself is very nice,when it has water.It has not had rain in a long time.Last years drought just about killed it!If we ever have a good wet spring and summer it will be a awsome little park again..

Not a bad stay 3-25-12. No rangers on duty and it was a weekday? Little water in lake, trails very poorly marked and no one to give guidance? Longways of the main highway. Overall would not and did not stay here on return trip.

just nature at its best. so different really enjoyed it.

Was a so so visited, wasn't excited about anything at the park, wasn't disappointed. I guess I would say if you drove that far, see it... if you don't have to make the trip.. then I wouldn't.

Our family went tent camping and completely enjoyed the trip. The park is out of the way so don't expect to stop at a Walmart or pickup firewood on your way. The staff was very friendly and the visitor center was above average and kept our kids attention better than most. Lots of hands on animal bones, furs, etc. We always stay at the RV part of a camp because we like the electricity and water. It was very clean and well maintained. The first night there was some kind of plumbing problem at the community bathhouse but it was corrected quickly. There is a modest playground and a place to play horseshoes but you need to provide your own. Each campsite is a back-in style which was no big deal to us but if your in a big rig it might be. The lake was extremely low and the water was 100 yards from the docks (no kidding)! The picnic areas were nice and well spaced out. There was an equestrian center but we did not explore what it offered. The park was not busy and it was spring break so I imagine it's nicely empty most of the year. We hiked a few of the mild trails and they were well maintained.We will return.

We have never camped just have visited a few times. Nice people and Buffalo to see.
