This is a great little museum. I wasn't expecting much and was surprised by the array of various bits of stuff from around the west. Quality antiques everywhere; with complete personalized narration. From stagecoaches to original iron lung, fire equipment ,original décor and dress, its all there. If you like history and friendly people.
I'm sure it's delightful, but their published hours of 10-4 don't mean much if the operators decide to take the day off, as they apparently did when we were there. I suggest you call ahead and tell them you'll be there on a certain day or you might be disappointed.
The focal point of this museum is a stagecoach originally built in Concord, New Hampshire. It was transported by boat to San Francisco and eventually driven to Wyoming where it was used as a part of the Cheyenne - Deadwood run. Eventually this stagecoach was retired from service and secured by The Stagecoach Museum in Lusk. It is one of the only two remaining stagecoaches of their kind. The other is in The Smithsonian. This museum contains an amazing array of historic artifacts from the early days of the American West and even the bones of a dinosaur! There is a $2 entrance fee for adults. Quite a bargain. The volunteer who assisted us, Ray Robb, is a native of Wyoming. He is a local, retired rancher who has lived locally for 40 years. Mr. Robb enjoys volunteering at The Stagecoach Museum and he is willing to provide interesting insights if you're so inclined. We were, he did.Highly recommend this museum.
We went to this museum on our return home from Mt Rushmore. The museum was quaint but had many interesting items, including an original stagecoach (only 2 left, with the other at the Smithsonian) from the Cheyenne-Black Hills run. Well worth the $2 charge to enter.
I loved the museum. It was awesome to see all the wonderful items they have accumulated. I was so thrilled to read the personal notes describing and telling the history of certain items versus the typical typed up information.
Mom & I were travelling through on Memorial Day Saturday. When we arrived at the museum, it was closed although the hours were posted and no notice of why they were closed. I even visited their website and no notice of being closed this weekend. We were really looking forward to this museum but were sadly disappointed that they were closed on a holiday weekend. So, mom & I took pictures by the stagecoach outside the museum, then we left and ate dinner at a great little restaurant in town. We don't know much about the museum since they were closed.
There were not that many stagecoaches here but there was a lot of other stuff to do with the area! A bit crowded and haphazard the museum had character and the lady managing it was very friendly and helpful. There is not much to do in Lusk but this is a must!
Stuff was authentic and donated from the community. People were super friendly and full of history from having lived there for generations.
We stopped at this museum on on a whim while on our road trip! There were so many neat artifacts to see that had all come from the Lusk, Wyoming area. We were in a bit of a hurry and probably could have stayed longer to see it all! The lady working was very friendly and took us on a tour. You can touch and play with quite a few items which made it even more fun for the kids. It was very inexpensive and a great place to see!!
This place has it all including 1 of 2 stagecoaches left that had run on the Cheyenne to Deadwood line. There are dinosaurs, to WWI uniforms, a great collection of saddles and horse drawn carts and carriages. They have areas set in the time for different rooms including a doctor's exam room. All good fun
When we drove into Lusk this little museum was not in our plans. None of my crew wanted to even get out of the car. They were all glad I forced them. The docent was a local who had so much information to share. It was a pleasure to comb through this very accessible and artifact filled building, There is an artifact for every type of museum lover..from dinosaur lovers to early American history. I highly recommend the stop.
For $2.00 you get your money's worth. An awful lot of stuff and photos to sort through, but all in all an interesting little museum to poke around.
We stopped here on our way up to mt. rushmore and it was a pleasant stop. I was mainly interested in seeing the stage coach (which is on the 2nd floor) but they have lots of stuff on display including clothes, furniture, weapons, machinery, saddles, and building structures from the past. The fee is $2/pp
My wife and I were blown away by this museum. It has a lot! Lots and lots of historical type stuff that are inside...but the best part is outside! They have saved some of the original buildings that made up Lusk many years ago. They've set it up like an old west town! IT IS SO COOL!!! Truly a hidden jewel! They ask that you donate/pay $5 per person...but they didn't seem to be too terribly strict about that. Besides, it's worth every penny!
