This place has been here since the beginning of the history of the town. Only business in town that is the same business, in the same building it started in. Great place and atmosphere. The bullet holes are a story all to themselves. Get the owner, Jim Blake to tell you about it. He's a wealth of information. Great guy...great place
My wife and I took a day trip to Meeteetse on August 22, 2014, while we were staying in Cody. This little town in Wyoming has lots to offer for western history buffs. We decided to have lunch at the Cowboy Bar after reading about it on the internet. We were not disappointed. A blonde lady (perhaps one of the owners?) seated us and asked us if we wanted lunch. We ordered draft beers from the list that the gentleman (perhaps the other co-owner?) suggested to us. The beers were nice and cold and were very good. Our order was taken, and my wife ordered the buffalo burger and I had the roast beef sandwich on sour dough bread with jalapenos and cheese. We also ordered a basket of onion rings. Everything was wonderful! The onion rings were crispy and fresh, and our sandwiches were excellent. The waitress was attentive to us, but not intrusive. We loved this old western bar and we told the owners that we hoped it would continue to stay open and successful. It's a nice place to stop and have a beer with something to eat. Great memories for us Arizona visitors!
I live in Cody and have been going to the Cowboy Bar and Cafe for the last few years. Normally, the food portions are good and the service is acceptable. Last night, we made the drive to Meeteeste with guests from out of town. I had been saving the visit for their last night as a treat. When we got there, we were the only party (usually the case) in the restaurant. After we got seated, the waiter took the drink order. A person in our group asked for a draught beer. He didn't know what beers were on tap and after some prodding, went to go find out. He came back and said he had two IPAs on tap. When asked which IPAs, he didn't know and had to make a second trip. After receiving the drinks, we began to place our order. It was only then that he informed us they were out of steaks. One person in the group was very disappointed as that was all she wanted. When we ordered ribs, he then informed us that they were out of two of the three rib sauces. When the the meals came, he got the order wrong for one of the guests. The meals were all of the standard quality but the portion size was definitely smaller than usual. The waiter only came back once to check on us. After the meal, the check was brought over. They added a 20% gratuity for parties of six or more (first time I had seen that done). I was so disappointed and angry that we put the money down and left. Our departure wasn't even acknowledged. It will be a LONG time (if ever) before I return to this establishment. My money will be spent else where!!
My husband and I decided to spend time in and around Meeteetse. Being hungry, we were fortunate to step back in time into the Cowboy Bar! The interior contains the original bar..gorgeous!! The walls are burned by ranch brands. Midafternoon it was slow and the manager asked if we would like out pictures taken (with my camera) behind the bar...What Fun!!The food, I had pizza (very good) and my husband had chili (thick meaty) over Texas toast. We thoroughly enjoyed it with our very cold beers!
I spent the night at a motel on the edge of Meeteesee, WY along the Greybull river. We ate a wonderful dinner at the Cowboy bar and were just mesmerized by the happenings within this bar but also in the town of Meeteesee. The owner sat at our table and spent his time educating us on the town and bar history and the time passed so quickly. You just can't get free infomation like we received plus a nice meal to go along with his stories.
The person who "greeted" us was extremely rude, it seemed like she really didn't care to serve us. I've never felt so unwelcome! We just decided to leave so we wouldn't inconvenience her any further.
Very disappointed. Waited to eat for miles and walked into just stand and wait for 15 minutes. Tried to sit at a vacant table and got repranded by the employee. Then we asked if we could sit at the bar while waiting and she said I wish you wouldn't. We left
I expected too much. Anyone can cook ribs that fall off the bone. These did. Big deal. It is the taste that was lacking. The chef claims a "secret" Captain Jack sauce. He's welcome to keep the secret. No one will be asking. The ribs were truly disappointing. The dinner salad was so-so at best. The onion rings, on the other hand, are outstanding. Dinner was very overpriced. The bar has a lot of history. Buy one of the dozen or so self-published books written by the bartender if you want to learn about it. Or take 6-8 minute and you can read ever caption on every photo on the wall. Another reviewer reported that the service was "unfriendly." That is way too generous to describe the owner/bartender. I didn't even get a grunt. Just a glare. The dinner server was new and didn't know the menu.I was the only person there for dinner. Now I know why. Ok place for a beer, onion rings and a discouraging word. Not much else.
I had a burger and wife had chicken fried staek....$40.00 No touble finding a seat with pop. of 327 in town.
We stopped for a burger and a beer. This bar is old and has so much history that you can look at all the things hanging on the wall for long time. We had the Buffalo burgers and chips. They were huge and very good. The barmaid that waited on us was a hoot and we had lots of fun with her. We would definately stop here again and recommend other to do so too.
Bartender very unfriendly and our food sat a while in the kitchen. We enjoy sitting in the old bar to eat. Lots of history to look at. Husband enjoyed his Burger melt. My BLT was very bland, don't know what the problem was, the bacon had no flavor at all. Don't bother to eat here, just go across the street to the Chocolatier.
This place has a separate restaurant, but we sat at a table on the bar side and had the place pretty much to ourselves except for a table of locals sharing a pitcher of beer. The pizza was suprisingly great for such a little place and the buffalo burger was very good. The bar itself was a real treat. The barkeep said it was made of Italian rosewood, and the carving was beautiful to see. So amazing to find such a delicate piece of artwork in a tiny town in the middle of Wyoming. Would eat there again.
The place is amazing due to the history. Continuously operating as a bar since 1893! The problems I had with the place are: 1) they still allow smoking in the bar and eating area. YUCK! 2) The staff was very, very unfriendly. It was rodeo weekend when we were there, and there were a lot of locals, and rodeo participants inside. We were not locals, and treated poorly-the male bartender was on the verge of being rude. I was actually offended by his behavior. Too bad, because this could be a really cool place to spend some time.
The open faced chili bison burger with jalapenos and several beers can cure pretty much anything thats wrong with you. This place is freakin fantastic!chris
Weiter so!
