Found the museum filled with many interesting items and displays as well as very unique items for purchase. Truly enjoyable.
This is a fun small place. I know the heart is in it but not at a level to call must go to visit. They hold fabulous fun events throu out the year. I truly feel when they receive the needed funds to take it up a few notches will definitely be a must visit museum which will leave you wanting to be a Cowgirl!
Small but chock full of amazing artifacts and history. We were fortunate to be greeted by Ben Hansen, a volunteer at the museum with a personal connection to Cow girls - his great great grandmother was one of single women who came to homestead in Wyoming! I had no idea the Wyoming granted women the right to own property or vote 50 years before the 19th amendment was passed. Don't let the small storefront put you off - a fascinating stop!
Before we ever started looking around at the museum, we had a very informative talk with the gentleman behind the counter. We learned some very impressive things about Wyoming and its belief in equality long before that belief ever came into vogue. The museum is quite a tribute to the women of the west and we really enjoyed the documentary.
The Cheyenne Cowgirls' Museum in downtown Cheyenne is within walking distance of restaurants and shopping. The museum is free and contains an amazing collection of Western memorabilia, with emphasis on the Wyoming cowgirls. Next door to the museum is the Emporium (a part of the museum). It is well stocked with both new and used Western items for sale, from jewelry to saddles! Both are only open for certain times of the year which include the tourist season. A "must see" for visitors.
It was here that I found out that Wy was the 1st state to grant women the right to own land and vote. They almost did not become a state because of this!! The museum is a wonderful tribute to the women that settled in Wy. Ben the volunteer that was there that day was so proud of his Great Great Great grandmother, as she was one of this strong women. His knowledge of the history and the area helped make the visit enjoyable.. It is not a large museum, but had alot of interesting things such as photos, clothing, stories about the women, home and farm stuff. They did not even ask for a donation.
The items in the museum are interesting, some of them have fascinating stories behind them. But the great attraction is Ben, the volunteer the day we were there. He told some great stories and made the history more enjoyable. It's in a great location (not to far from the capitol building and train depot), so it should be part of your visit to downtown Cheyenne.
We found this great little museum by accident. Run by volunteers, it's a fascinating glimpse into the role women have played in settling the West. There are interesting posters, rodeo costumes, displays, and artifacts. Definitely worth a visit!
