I imagine there is good fishing out there....even if there is not a fish in the place, the scenery is breathtaking! The mountains are on 3 sides of the water and the setting as you drive by the reservoir will have you taking picture after picture. There are boat ramps and dry camping by the lake also.
We were traveling east from West Yellowstone MT when we approached the reservoir. The lake that makes up the reservoir is large and beautiful. Lots of places to put your boat in and lots of beautiful scenery along this drive. You will come to the Buffalo Bill Dam as you run along the side of the reservoir. Like most of Wyoming the scenery is breathtaking!
Lovely scenery. Convenient to visit on route out of town travelling to Yellowstone.Combined it with visit to the dam
We took our sons there on our way to Yellowstone NP. The museum is a must see. Lots of info and artifacts. Totally enjoyed our visit! Take your time and read the fascinating facts surrounding this iconic man! We visited in June of 2007!
My 10 year old and I went and really enjoyed it tremendously. The information, the scenery and all was great. They had someone take you to and back to visitor center with a great gift shop and video of how much money, time and all that it took to build this one of a kind dam!! Really worth your time and it is free!! The education is worth money alone especially when they compare it to Hoover Dam and others. Children can learn a lot of what our ancestors endured and went through to get water to places where it is scarce and you all have to do to it!!
The reservoir is beautiful. Only thing was the rainfall this year was above average along with the snow melt making the reservoir water levels high. Very few boats were on the water. I am not sure if that was due to the water level or to high winds causing 2-3 ft waves.
Far more interesting than I would have thought, worth a pop out from town or call in whilst passing if you have a spare 30 minutes.
The damn and info center is really neat. The people working there were very friendly and informative.
This lake is formed by a dramatic, narrow dam in a steep canyon of the Shoshone river. The lake itself is a bit windy and barren, but the dam is a must see, and the drive is amazing. Once you reach the end of the lake each direction you look is a completely different landscape: badlands, grass hills and rimrocks, basalt mountains and cliffs, and toward Yellowstone park, your classic mountain views.
Drilling began in 1904 in the construction of the dam. Amazingly no steel was utilized within the construction. The cost of the dam, just under $930,000.00 and the lives of 7 men.Still utilized today to irrigate 93,000 acres. Standing at the top of the dam, one can hear the thunder of water gushing through into the reservoir below. A true example of man harnessing nature!
This is a very interesting and scenic stop on the way into Cody from the west. Fascinating when you consider how long ago it was built and just another feather in the cap of Bill Cody. What a visionary!
The reservoir is large and beautiful. I love to stop here on my way up the Wapiti Valley. Great place to take out the chairs, eat a sandwich and drink in the Wyoming landscape.
you cant lost this ride! its wonderful too see the red mountains around the lake/reservoir. The green colour of the water makes the scene very special. Its near the city and you take a beautiful road to get there.
This reservoir is a good place to see if you like or are interested in Dams. Even though you can't go down into the dam, there is a good history in the foyer to read. It is very clean & friendly volunteers staff it.
We stopped and visited the Bill Cody Reservoir area after leaving Red Lodge MT, on the way back to the Tetons. If you would like a change of scenery from a week in Yellowstone, this is a great day trip to include with a western town visit to Cody, WY. Great opportunity for some unique photos.
