Firehole Canyon Drive is a 2 mile one way road just outside the Madison Junction along the Firehole river that provides a peek into the heart of Yellowstone without all the regular two way traffic. The canyon itself is beautiful Summer or Winter. There is a spot you can pull over and park to view the water falls and take a swim in the summer.
We have been visiting this beautiful canyon for 50 years. Not all that long ago the swimming hole was only known to park employees and locals and very private. The climb down from the road was tricky but the water was a little warmer than usual because of the thermal basins up river. Now there is a boardwalk/stairs and signs and all the tourists will be there. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful spot, so bring your swimming suit and spend an hour or two.
This was a pleasant side trip off the main road. It has great views and a fun little swimming hole/beach! We weren't brave enough to get in, but others were swimming. It's well worth the time.
We visited this drive at sunset one evening and got to see multiple geysers go off. The light of the fading sun on the spouting water is incredible.
This is a short loop off of the Grand Loop Road between Madison and Lower Geyser Basin. It only takes a few minutes, even if you stop and view the falls and river at the couple of parking/viewpoints. There is an area that you can go down to the river and sit/swim in the water. They say the water is actually pretty warm due to geothermal features under the river. We didn't try but there were people in the river.
It is a short drive to see the falls, so take the time. They are lovely. We did it first thing one morning and were the only people there. Our trip was early September, I imagine the falls only run harder and faster with snow melt earlier in the season.
Near Madison Junction, is a 2 mile scenic spur road called Firehole Canyon Drive. Following the river, the narrow, one-way paved road twists through the canyon. The highlight for many is Firehole Falls (40’ high). There is a swimming hole (one of two safe and legal swimming places in YNP). A wooden stairway takes you down closer to the river but sometimes it is closed. Parking is limited and traffic can be heavy at times.
This diversion off of the main road between Old Faithful and Madison Junction is lesser traveled. But we saw several sites that were so worth the side trip: Firehole Geyser, plus several geysers that were very active and so few tourists. We happened to see many bison in this area over the years.
This is the one-way drive worth taking past the Firehole Falls just south of the Madison Information Center. Narrow, paved road but adequate turnouts to stop and see the falls in the forest.
We enjoyed this drive so much that we did it two days in a row! It is short but truly spectacular! We stopped at the swimming hole the second trip and walked down the steps to get closer to the water. Some boys thought about swimming but backed out.
There is limited parking here, but it’s a great drive and a great way to connect with nature. The Firehole River flows through this scenic canyon and there are usually a few tourists taking a dip here. The road is one-way so that makes it a little safer but it is a narrow road. Close to the end of the one way drive is a lovely waterfall. Afternoon sun hits the cascades and provides nice photos.
Don't miss this one way tour. It is very pretty great for taking some memorable pics. You do pass by Firehole Falls, so stop and get out and have a look see. A bonus is that the incessant and irritating large tour buses are forbidden on this drive, Yes !
Firehole Canyon Drive is a beautiful side drive off the main road. You can only enter it one way heading south from Madison toward Old Faithful. Definitely the way to go if you are driving that direction. Watch out for slow cars and cars pulled to the side.
