This place is just a wonderful place to look around and buy great snacks and organic honey. Some stuff is a bit pricy but it's just so wonderful! The staff is incredibly sweet and the view of the mountains and trees is wonderful! I loved it! Anybody heading anywhere near this place should definitely visit.
Been wanting to stop for awhile and we finally did and very glad we did.... we bought a pie, root beer float and fudge..must stop
We stopped here for a snack and a browse on the way from Cloudcroft. The fudge and the root beer are excellent, worth the stop alone. The shop also sells crafts and such, though we didn't purchase any.The staff were very helpful.
Nice place to stop near the Lincoln Forrest- we had just picked up some u pick apples and stopped in for some pie and drinks. The pecan pie was homeade and some of the best ever- the rootbeer and the sasparilla were also good. The jerky selection was good, and there was quite a few items crammed i to the store for the family to examine. Certainly worth stopping if you are nearby.
Thanks so much for the lovely review. We do aim to please and try to be a unique destination for our visitors.
This is a great little shop and a must for visitors. Feels like a trip back in time. I stopped in to grab some morning coffee and beef jerky. While there, I perused all of the shelves and found some great postcards to mail back home (there's a post office nearby in High Rolls) and several souveniers as well - I just couldn't pass them up. Lots of things to choose from, including handmade jewelry, clothing items, funky toys for the kids, and fun rustic signs! The cashier was friendly and offered her advice on a nearby hike. Plenty of parking and a large porch with picnic tables to rest on. Don't pass it by! I regret that I never made it back for the cider - guess I'll have to make another trip soon.
There is ample parking. There is a porch with picnic tables and a restroom for women and a urinal for men at the end of the porch. Inside there's lots of stuff from all over the world, plus greeting cards, lots of candies, home-made fudge (in many different flavors like mint, espresso, amoretto, etc.-- you can ask for a sample), pie, soft drinks, and coffee. Since there is no seating inside, I suppose if one buys pie to eat, one takes it outside to the picnic tables on the porch. It's very rustic and a bit touristy, but we had not stopped before. It's worth a look once.
Made my husband stop by here on our way back to ruidoso. Lots of cute vintage stuff. We had a chili cheese dog, which was very good. They also have homemade fudge and apple crumb pie I got to sample the walnut chocolate. fudge, which was delicious. I ended sharing the apple crumb pie, so good! I wish I had had coffee with it. The staff was incredibly welcoming.
I love this place! We live where Cracker Barrels rule in this genre BUT, when it comes to the merchandise, this place rocks! Its like going back to my childhood when I walk in this place. So much fun! The train overhead is a great touch and the music chosen for the store is great. A lot of places miss that detail. Try the elk sausage dogs too. Yummy! Don't forget the pies...
I stopped here on a whim and it wasn't quite what I expected, but I enjoyed it anyway. There's a case of sodas and drinks which I liked, I like trying unusual drinks and they had ginger beer from Australia and other neat items too. I got a square of peanut butter fudge which was quite delicious. There were a lot of neat magnets and signs throughout which you could buy and which make excellent decor. What really made this place stand out was the lady working the fudge counter, who seemed genuinely delighted to be serving customers and was contagiously happy. I think she likely brightens anyone's day who stops there, she seemed to be enjoying her job so much.
Absolutely LOVED visiting with proprietor Beverly and with our dear friend, Susan Bridges Narveson who works there. Beverly is an artist who designed all of the signage and characters used on them. BEAUTIFUL place - so many beautiful things to buy that can't be found in many places. We enjoyed their Elk sausage and homemade sarsaparilla as well as their friendly conversation.
Great review and a very accurate description of what we offer and do. Thanks!
Sorry you were disappointed. We would love to clarify what we do at the Old Apple Barn. It has always been seasonal and follows the availability of produce and enough traffic to pay for itself. We are more an old fashioned emporium and not a sit down restaurant. Here is what we make.PiesThe barn has a fully equipped bakery on the upper floor serviced by a dumbwaiter. I have uploaded a picture of it on this site. Our creme pie crusts are not what you get at a store. They are pre-made but have a butter base unlike the store variety that has a shelf life of 5 years. We make the sauces and flavorings for all our creme pies and use local pecans and creamery butter throughout. Our bourbon soaked cherries in a special sauce top the Cherries and Creme pie. The apple pies use our twice baked lard based crust (old school) and fresh apples. I have my own formula for apple pie spice and have it fresh ground several times a season. The crumble top is freshly made each week with local honey, molasses, whole oats and spices mixed with LOTS of fresh butter. All made right here.CiderWe sold Carrizozo cider for 5 years and decided to make our own 4 years ago. Theirs was too acidic and artificial tasting. We have a cider making facility here that is separate from the bakery and make cider each week. We use lots of real cherry too. That is what is in the Cider Ice machine.PopcornsWe get freshly grown popcorns shipped in from Indiana amish to make our buttered popcorn, Wisconsin cheddar cheese corn and candies or caramel corn made with fresh butter.Elk SausageOur Elk sausages are custom made for us with the minimum of preservative. They do come frozen and are stored that way in our walk-in freezer. They would spoil in a week without it. We thaw some of them and heat them for 20 seconds in a commercial microwave just enough to melt the cheddar cheese inside them. We tried the simmering water hot dog method but found that it lost some of the cheese and they were soggy. This is the best method via taste tests. All our toppings are fresh ( roma tomatos, white onions, flame roasted hatch chile, fresh kosher dill slices )ProduceWe sell local produce when available. Cherries, figs, plums, and apples. The first 3 were frozen out this year and on a good year we will have up to 15 varieties of apples.... all southwest mountain grown. We also makeCaramel fudge apples with local pecansWe make 5 custom flavored popcorn salts45 flavors of fudge made daily with fresh butterWe sell local honey, local pecans and pistachiosPricingWe follow industry standard pricing. Inventory likes are up to what each person is in the market for. We cater to the majority of our clientele. Porta-PottyWe have a custom building with motion activated lights, fans and heaters that is pumped weekly or as needed. A necessity with being away from a city sewer system. Rustic but clean.Hope this clarifies things. Come back during apple season. Its lovely here and lots of goodies that time of year.
