I always call off-road in New Mexico as the "way back" because when you go there one can get so removed from the usual noise of life and civilization we are subjected to daily. Ojito is one place where the quiet and the natural beauty is soul-nourishing. Multiple colors of sandstone, hoodoos, caprocks, mountain bike riding - 35 miles from Albuquerque, 60 miles from Santa Fe. Hikes are easy and manageable where one can enjoy the smells, the sounds, and colors, with relative ease. If you Google Ojito Wilderness you should see that there are folks who go out there and shoot off weapons. We saw a man and his son with rifles in their hands walking the main road, Cabezon Road. However they seemed to be careful and safe. If you want to get away and experience the "way back" with ease in five to six hours from Albuquerque, take a look.
