I absolutely loved this place and will return. It doesn't have any "fine art" but is perfect for the person who enjoys color, simplicity and nostalgia. This really appealed to the child in me and gave me so many ideas for future crafting projects.
I was advised by people I trust not to miss this and we squeezed it in on our last day. so glad we did! The museum is densely packed with cool stuff to look at. Loved it.
The main exhibition is a huge room full of recent dioramas from lots of different cultures, at different points in time. Great gift shop.
Thought the educational exhibit on immigration was exceptional. The folk art was too much for us. We didn't know what type of folk art and it wasn't to our interests
The main collection here had SO many pieces and we never really got the hang of how they were organized. Instead of presenting a clear "story line," it was just overwhelming. By contrast, the special exhibition on pottery from the American South was stunning, and extremely well currated. This was one of the greatest museum experiences I've had recently.
I love folklore museums. This one is unusual because all the traditions are together. For instance, there is a long case with a market scene that must have at least 100 figures from around the world selling whatever you find in various street markets. I suggest picking up one of the booklets when you enter the main room or you may be overwhelmed by the sheer size and variety.
The Girard Wing at this museum is extraordinary. Colorful, fun and over 100,000 pieces of folk art from all over the world generously given by the Girards. It's a no miss place to visit when in Santa Fe. The museum front desk is very helpful and up on the events coming as well as in progress.
Not only is this Museum a must visit; the gift shop is the a must visit. Available for purchase are signed and very unique pottery, and varied pieces of unique folk art from many countries.I could not resist a "poodle" from Indonesia made from panted pieces of what I think is tin. If you find something you can not resist the Museum will wrap and ship it to you.
You've never seen anything like this amazingly displayed and enormous collection of folk art form all over the world. This is absolutely the one do not miss destination in Santa Fe. Period. And they have a wonderful gift shop which is free to enter. Do yourself a favor and visit museum hill and the Folk Art Museum first once there. Nothing else like it in the world.
Wonderful exhibit on wood carving. Love the children's toy exhibit from around the world!,, the area with children's activities made it very family friendly.
There is probably no place like this anywhere else. You can't image the folk art in this place. It will take a few hours to go thru it but well worth it.
One of the best museums in a museum rich town. Unique exhibits that you will see nowhere else. Take yourtime and appreciate the amazing artistry of "folk art." Museum includes a first rate gift shop and a great book store. The setting for the museum, on Museum Hill is as spectacular as the museum itself, offering some ofthe best views in all of Santa Fe.
Do not miss this Museum. It was different and do take the guided tour with the guide. She will explain the minitatures and all things that you need to see. This is a great place to visit with kids, but also for everyone. We loved it and will be back.
The Museum of International Folk Art is a unique institution with interesting exhibits. The exhibits called miniatures were my favorites. The gift shop has many exotic crafts for sale. Especially the animal masks from Mexico. The museum is on one level and is not large but well designed.
This amazing collection of folk art from all over the world is unlike any you will see anywhere else. It's for all ages, inividuals, families, groups and plan to have enough time not to simply rush through but enjoy the exhibits and variety of materials assembled for your enjoyment. It's also out from town on Museum Hill, near other wonderful places to visit. And if you need to take a gift home for anyone, you'll find something of interest here.
