This is supposedly a remnant of a glacier that use to cover this area of Northern Jersey thousands of years ago. It now sits in the middle of Rock Road (duh) and Doremus Avenue in Glen Rock. If you are in the area it is worth a stop and see and maybe a picture next to the "Rock".
But it is unique... left over from the ice age.. I guess it fell off the ice glacier and was left by itself...
Glen Rock is named for a 570-ton boulder, believed to have been deposited by a glacier, that stands at the northern end of Rock Road, the town's main street. Called Pamachapura, or Stone from Heaven, by the Delaware (Lenape) Indians who were the original people of the land, it served as a base for Indian signal fires and later as a trail marker for colonists. The Rock was left by retreating glaciers in a small valley (glen). If you happen to be in the area it's a sight to see, just the idea that this boulder was deposited by glacier and the Lenape Indians used it a ritual area is amazing. If you happen t drive along route 20 you can also see the fishing sites of the Lenape Indians, a must see if you're in the area.
It was worth the trip from New York. I find natural land marks to be interesting. To see and touch what I have learned in school about geology and it's history is great to me.
This is a must-see in Glen Rock New Jersey! The Rock is literally the Rock in the Glen, hence the name of the town is Glen Rock. Located on Rock Road, naturally, the legend goes that the local Lenape indians used to meet on top of the massive glacial structure. Today you can walk or drive around it.
Lived most of my life in Glen rock and anytime I have a new visitor I always show them this site. It's worth seeing at least once. It's a marvel of nature
The symbol of Glen Rock is right in the middle of town. Worth a walk or a bike ride to see the reason this town got it's name. I can imagine the early settler's saying "Meet me at the glen rock."
I love it there! Nice people, good alcohol, fun times. What's not to love? Go here for a lot of charity and fund raising events, too.
What's to say about a big rock. The retreating glacier left it in the middle of a street. Good thing it was not left on a front yard or even worst, on a house.
Giant rock in the middle of the road. The best part is taking out-of-towners to see it. They are always so stunned and amused at it for some reason. Makes me feel good, because I know I am close to home.
This boulder was brought southward by a glacier during the last ice age and has rested for thousands of years where it now sits, on the corner of Doremus and Rock Rd. The Leni-Lenape Native Americans held meetings on top of the Rock hundreds of years ago.
