Black River County Park is a nice place for a decent hike. The hike is mostly flat and has fairly easy terrain. There are a couple of trails up to a few miles. Its very peaceful in there and overall a really nice hike.
I took my family hiking and we started our journey in the park by visiting working watermill. The volunteers who work there were able to demonstrate and convey the atmosphere of the actual working mill of XIX century. Their knowledge of history, clothing, the entire atmosphere took us back in time. Black River hiking was an excellent addition to our time travel?
I love this park! It's my go to place if I feel like going for a hike. The mill is very interesting and worth exploring as well, though I myself go there for the trails. The trail starts off by the river, which leads to a small reservoir and manmade waterfall... It continues beyond that to a nice swampy area (the paths are usually dry, there are some bridges in the more wet areas and there are also rocks as step stones in others.) The trail splits after that to 2 others, which are a bit more challenging and lead in several loops if going off to the right. These require some climbing over rocks and fallen trees, which is a ton of fun. The trail to the left at the split leads up the mountain to the fields and Enviormental Center. It's very relaxing and worth the mountain trail. I would recommend a bit more planning or perhaps getting a trail map if you're gonna attempt the longer trails since the trail blazes aren't always easy to see. :) Def worth exploring though! ... Also, my dog adores the trails because the river is easily accessible in some areas and she can have a swim before getting on with the hike! Also, unlike some other parks, people of the trails here seem to follow the rules and tend to keep their dogs on leash! Which I appreciate and which is another reason I prefer the trails here. http://www.morrisparks.net/maps-zoom.asp <- trail map available here.
I visit the cooper mill and the black river park on a somewhat regular basis mostly in the spring, fall and winter month. The hiking is relaxing and starting at the cooper mill you can walk up along the black river to escape and just clear your mind. Alternatively you can explore them mill or one of the special events that area scheduled thought the year including sheep sheering, colonial, etc. I walked to Kay once and still need to visit more of the interconnected sights. The whole area is great for photography and I've meet many ami true and professional photographers there. Worth a visit and its just off old route 24 county road 513 west of Alstede farms before Parker road. Highly recommended and worth a visit.
We did not find this place easily even having the web directions. Should have maybe said, just west of Alstede Farms...anyway...quite lovely and people so friendly.
The Black River County Park is made up of 510 acres with four cultural sites (Cooper Mill, Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center, Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center, and Willowwood Arboretum) which are linked by hiking trails. We parked at the Cooper Mill cultural site parking lot to begin our hike along the Black River Trail. The day we were there the Gristmill was closed but the trail was open, so you may want to check the operating times of the different cultural sites if you plan to visit them.
