The temps hit 40 today so we set out to see if we could spot the snowy. Stopped by the visitor center to see if we could get some detailed info but found out that it has not been around for about one week. Well maybe next time. We proceeded up the 8 mi drive stopping off at the first boardwalk. Found a nice heron and many birds in the far distance. We quickly took the drive and spotted various ducks, gulls, a few hawks and one bald eagle. Took some nice scenic winter shots. Surprised at how many people were out but mostly everyone knows the protocol of being quiet and pulling to the side so others can view the wildlife. Will be back in the spring to walk the trails.

We walked two trails...Jens trail takes you from almost the parking area to the back and then we took the road to return. WE took another trial that took you to the look out stand. We saw a snake curled up in the sun, many birds getting ready for winter, a turtle, turkey and butterflies. Its amazing people don't litter. Its the honor system of paying when you come in and I hope every one is honorable!

The weather was miserable and rainy. We saw so many geese and ducks on the wildlife loop that it was a great experience. Shorebirds and more were in evidence and we saw lots of great black ducks, hooded mergansers, buffleheads and lots, lots more. The Forsythe Refuge is a must see for all who enjoy wildlife and conservation.Today was a no fee day but those who have a Federal Duck Stamp do not have to pay the entrance fee although supporting the refuge is important.

We have repeatedly visited Forsythe NWR while staying in the Atlantic City area. It is a wonderful outing for the day, no matter what time of year. There are trails to walk and an eight mile drive through which takes your through the refuge. During the summer you will see numerous birds that are there during the summer, during the winter you will have bald eagles in abundance, northern harrier hawks everywhere, peregrine falcons, snow geese and artic swans in uncountable numbers and many types of ducks. If you are lucky, you may even see some deer. We always pack a lunch and spend the day, pulling over halfway through to enjoy lunch. My only issue with the refuge is that they need to add a port-a-potty about half way through. Other NWRs have already done this (i.e. Bombay Hook NWR in Smyrna DE). Be patient and take you time driving. On this trip we observed the visiting snowy owl and quite a few bald eagles out on the ice. You will need binoculars, without them you may not see all the wonders that are there. Many people drove right by us, not really taking the time to look closely.

The Forsythe Refuge is one of New Jersey's hidden treasures. There is something for everyone, of all ages and all capabilities. There are miles of trails you can hike in the woods or the marsh in all seasons. There are boardwalks where you can stroll out in the grass at high or low tide. I think the most amazing part is the 8.5 mile wildlife drive. You slowly drive along the bay and the marsh, often with water on both sides of the one-way dirt road. There is room to pass stopped vehicles and even towers to climb to get a higher perspective. There are all kinds of water birds easily spotted: ducks, geese, herons of all kinds, osprey, eagles and last winter 3 Snowy Owls. It is a photographer's paradise every day of the year. It only costs $4 a car and if you are a senior citizen, you can use your National Parks pass. Every trip around the drive is different. We went for the sunset two days ago and was astonished by the amazing colors in the sky and reflected in the water. It is easy to find, right off of Route 9 south of Smithville, north of the exits for Atlantic City. If you love the water, nature or birds, this place should be on your short list.

If you're staying around the Smithville or Atlantic City area this is well worth a visit. Very interesting visitors centre talking about all the birds that migrate through New Jersey and what is being done to protect the habitat and the bird species. There is then an 8 mile drive around the sanctuary with list of stopping off points where you can get out and walk the various trails or just get up close with the birds and take some good photos. Be sure to pick up the self guided tour brochure as there are 21 markers when you can read very relevant information. Fascinating to be in such a peaceful place and yet look across the water and realise how built up Atlantic City is.Make sure you don't drive past this on the way to casinos, beaches and shopping Malls as this is a really interesting and tranquil place

We drove around three times this visit. Saw different birds each time. Beautiful sunset. A bargain at $4 a car.

Went to the sod banks in the back bay at Scott's Landing -caught lots of minnows to use for bait for surf fishing later. Talked to some local guys who were commercial clammers and crabbers who were bringing in their small boats with their catch of the day from the back bays. Very interesting learning about their experiences dealing with weather and other adverse conditions while struggling to make a living from the marshland.

During a recent stay at the Stockton Seaview in Galloway, NJ, we visited the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge. What a beautiful escape and hidden gem. A local waitress told us about the refuge, otherwise we wouldn't have known about it. There were many migrating egrets the day we visited, along with blue herons, and osprey. There are observation decks and hiking trails, but we stayed in the car and enjoyed the peaceful drive along the water to observe the wildlife. We even saw a red fox cross the road in front of us. In the distance you can see Atlantic City. We were warned about greenheads, but since we stayed in the car they were not a problem. The fee was $4 a car, or $2 a person if you were walking.

This is the largest sanctuary east of the Mississippi and each season brings an abundance of migrating and seasonal birds. There are really no bad months here since the arrival of the snowy owls, but insect repellant is necessary during green head fly season.

My husband and I enjoyed our afternoon so much at Edwin B Forsythe Wildlife Refuge. It includes a beautiful drive through the saltwater marsh, boardwalk viewing platform, an observation tower and hiking trails. It also had a brand new and informative exhibit in the visitor center. We loved the boardwalk out into the marsh, we were able to see thousands of fiddler crabs in the sand. The boardwalk also had binoculars you could look at the ospreys in their nests. We enjoyed the observation deck, where we were able to look out at the marsh and view many types of birds. Throughout the day we saw great egrets, snowy egrets, osprey, black skimmers, and cormorants. We did one short hike called Leeds Eco Trail, later we tried to do Jen's Trail but we were getting eaten alive by the biting flies (who could care less about our bug spray) and we had to turn around. Despite this we enjoyed ourselves It is a very beautiful place, I kept saying "I can't believe I didn't know this was here."

Terrific bird refuge. Ospreys on every man-made elevated nest. Herons. Gulls. Not many people. Fine dirt road around the periphery. Great view of the Atlantic City skyline in the distance. Only problem -- tons and tons of greenheads. Stay in your car to avoid them.

After six straight days of beach and sunshine I headed here for a change of scenery. I had been here before and remembered how terrible the bugs were so I drove the eight miles. What a beautiful drive through a part of the shore that many never see. Best entertainment for four bucks! On every manmade platform there was a nest with Osprey babies. Loads of shore birds and turtles to observe. Take your binoculars and your bug spray!

i like nature and i think that this place is definitely worth seeing. i saw thousands of birds flying around the refuge. you will see lots of birds depending on the season. there are lookout posts with great views. mostly you are driving on a wide road with water on both sides. there are little trees and bushes at the edge of the road and there are birds in all the trees .in the july 2013 i visited with my wife and child and we spent about an hr exploring. we enjoyed it and hope to return the next time we are in the neighborhood.
