We went up to experience the views and were not disappointed. It was a bright sunny day and the leaves were changing. It was beautiful. There was also a wedding going on at the top, which we thought was great. This did not seem to affect parking. We easily found a spot by the fire tower.Great views and trails to hike. Perfect day.
Great little trail (1,5 miles each way) in NH. We hiked with another family and 4 kids in total (5-9). All of us has a blast scrambling on the rocks and the great view from the tower at the stop. Make sure to pick up a map at the parking lot. Took us 3 hours with a long lunch and lots of stops to take in the scenery.
Unpleasant parking conditions. Attendants (Lee) are rude and not caring. We drove for two hours to hike one of the easier trails (Arrow). Parking was full and attendants were unpleasant and not helpful at all. After two hours of drive it was very disappointing. It happened second time. We will never go back.
This is a challenging hike for beginners and the path can be steep at times, but there are several trails with degrees of difficulty. The summit has a tower as well as several viewing areas. You can drive to the summit as well. The mountain is also the site of bird migration, but you have to catch it at the right time (in Mid-September). We didn't like the traffic noises that you can hear on the path (we prefer to believe we are in the wilderness).
Pack Monadnock is awesome. You can drive to the top, walk the paved road or take various trails to the top to include the Wapack Trail. It costs a few bucks but, whatever it is worth it.
Love this little park! I used my ElliptiGo to bike from downtown Wilton to the summit. The ride back down was much more fun :-)
I walked up from Old Mountain Road to the summit of North Pack - took 55 minutes and was said to be 1.7 miles and about 900 feet of ascent. Did it in May, and it was pretty sweaty I can tell you. There were biting insects, but with long sleeves and repellent I managed to get away with only 3 bites. You had a fair view from the very summit, and the occasional clearing on the way up, but mostly it was just the forest. This may be what you're used to in the USA, but I'm familiar with getting extensive views most of the time in the Alps, in the English Lake District, Northumberland, and in the Scottish Highlands, so it was all a little disappointing. There were no facilties, so take water, snacks, and be careful not to wander from the yellow waymarkers on the trees, or the cairns nearer the summit. (Round trip 2 hours for fit people, with summit pause of 15 minutes, via northern approach from Mountain Road. There's a small car park, and map. Pay entrance fee, and longer walk, via southern approach and Miller State Park).
It is in Peterborough & Temple not Fitzwilliams. We have North pack & South Pack to choose from for climbing. You can see Boston from the summit ona clear day with the naked eye. Stunning , it is also home to the Wapack National wildlife refuge Amazing is all I can say ,,,Love it Hike it often
Wow. I have taken many hikes in my day, but this one was by far the most interesting, and very challenging. It tested my endurance (I passed! Almost passed out! :) ) The hike to the top crosses boulders, rock-falls, steep areas, and there are few level spots to rest while you walk. This is not a hike for those people who are significantly out of shape, at least not to the top. I'm just out of shape, and people were passing me by the entire 6.5 hours it took me to reach the top and come back down. But, the sense of accomplishment was sweet, and I felt half my 50 years of age when I reached the bottom again. Wear sturdy, ankle supporting shoes. Bring plenty of water, trail snacks, and a walking stick. Dress in layers if the weather is inclement (it was raining on the day I went). And be careful. The most beautiful hike I've taken, and I caught the fall foliage when the clouds lifted 3/4 of the way back down. Heaven.
We stopped on the way home from Boston, so didn't have real hiking shoes. One person drove us to the top, then 2 of us hiked down a barely marked trail, but down is down. Birds and mushrooms were found along the trail, and even though there were at least 6 cars in the parking lot, we never saw other people.
Pack Monadnock (aka Miller State Park) is a nice little trip and great for a group of mixed adventure tastes (from nada to hey, should have brought my parachute). You can drive all the way to the top, and once there explore several summit trails or visit with the Audubon raptor migration watch folks, etc. Particularly impressive for fall colors (especially on a sunny day after overnight rain). The road is quite steep and somewhat narrow, but is fully paved. There are few/none sheer drop-offs so is better than most drive-to-the-top roads if you have squeamish passengers. At the top, you can climb the fire lookout tower to just below the actual lookout for an incredible 360 degree view reaching all the way to Boston on a clear day (it was clear the day we were there, so I can vouch that I really did see the skyscrapers of Boston). Also a great view of Monadnock to the southwest, and a very expansive view of valleys and peaks to the north. For folks who don't like steep stairs, there is also a ground-based Boston overlook off the summit loop (look for signs just to the left of the small restroom building at the edge of the parking lot near the beginning/southeast of the parking loop). The summit loop has red blazes. The yellow-blazed trail that leaves the north end of the parking loop is relatively flat for a few hundred yards and leads to the Audubon raptor watch, the day we were there 2 folks had telescopes tracking the action. There are also interpretive displays about the migrations. There are also picnic tables scattered about and a small shelter.
The view at the top was amazing!!!!! We stopped for lunch up there. I went like 2 or 3 years ago with my 4th grade class. The hike itself was really fun.
The road to the mountain was closed with no explanation given. I had counted on showing my friends the lovely view from the top.
A nice day hike through the area. Great for kids or a short trip before/after work.
Really nice hike with great views.like to hike it in the morning
