My photo group hit this just right by visiting on Oct 5th, the foliage made for stunning backgrounds. The ruins and the staircase are really cool. The trails were NOT well marked! A pond was depicted at the top of a loop so we followed the trail expecting a remote pond. It turned out the map is wrong and it is just the swamp that starts in the parking lot but is not shown at the parking area.. That was very disappointing but it was beautiful just the same and we got some extra climbing exercise! . The best way to get there is to enter "Egypt Road" as your destination. Egypt is a dead end directly across from the small parking area. Other Google Maps and GPS entries gave false info and got many people were misdirected out the opposite way. It is a pretty site and a short enough visit that leaves time to explore other landmarks that day.
This is a beautiful natural spot, with well-maintained hiking trails to a pond and scenic overlook. It also has an interesting history, and scenic ruins of an old mansion. Great place to bring the kids!
Eerie place with an amazing history. If you park in the parking area it's an easy/short walk to get to the ruins. We stayed about an hour and had a GREAT time.Be careful, lots of broken glass on the ground.
This is a very interesting site. The ruins are said to be haunted- my laborador and I found this in Haunted Hikes NH by Marianne Oconnor. The hike trails are moderate, yet not difficult if you are used to walking in fall in NH. Follow trail markers carefully. The views are worth it. We will definitely go again for a longer hike in warmer weather.
I Love this place , a bit difficult to find. It is like an enchanted forest. Madame' Sheri was known to drive though town with her Horse & buggy naked. The hike in is easy and then there are several trails to choose from depending on the level of challenge you desire. It is pet friendly and your dogs can climb unleashed
We hiked up the shorter route and enjoyed the view at the top.
This hike is famous for the stone foundation and stairway that remain from a mansion that once stood on the site. Books have been written about the roaring 20's and the parties that once happened here. The foundation is fun to look and walk around and the nearby hike is nice as well.
Go to Indian Pond & follow the signs. It's a great hike that offers great views of the pond, and on to Mine Ledge before meeting with the summit trail from Hinsdale.
If this is what I am thinking of, there was a story of Madame Sherri who had a house just outside Brattleboro. The house burned down, but the stone staircase and fireplace still stand there in the middle of the woods. I remember there being some grafitti and garbage there when I was little - I hope time has treated it well.
This is a convenient place for travelers and visitors to visit the past. Our innkeeper gave us Madam Sherri's biography and once we crossed the bridge and stepped on the grounds we could feel and hear those glorious parties that Madame Sherri would throw. Lovely!
